Biography

Short Description

Ælfric of Abingdon, also known as Ælfric of Canterbury, was a late tenth-century Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk and prelate who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 995 until his death in 1005. His year and place of birth are not recorded in surviving contemporary sources, and no reliable evidence supports a specific birth date. He is generally understood to have come from a family of some standing in England; later monastic writers associated him with the nobility and, in some house traditions, with a brother named Leofric connected to St Albans Abbey, but these kinship details cannot be confirmed with certainty from documents of his own lifetime. He entered the monastic life at Abingdon Abbey in Berkshire, a community restored in the mid-tenth century as part of the English Benedictine Reform associated with Dunstan, Æthelwold of Winchester, and Oswald of Worcester.

After a period as a monk of Abingdon, Ælfric became abbot of St Albans Abbey in Hertfordshire. He later returned to Abingdon as its abbot, an office usually dated from about 984, following Abbot Osgar. In the early 990s he was consecrated Bishop of Ramsbury, a West Saxon see whose territory covered Wiltshire and neighbouring districts and which in this period was sometimes held together with an abbacy. After the death of Archbishop Sigeric, Ælfric was elected to the archbishopric of Canterbury and translated to that see in 995. In 997 he travelled to Rome and received the pallium from Pope Gregory V, thereby confirming his metropolitan status in relation to the papacy.

His archiepiscopate fell during the reign of King Æthelred II, a period of renewed Viking attacks on England and of continued effort to entrench the Benedictine Reform in the English Church. Ælfric is traditionally credited with advancing or completing the replacement of the secular clergy of the cathedral community of Christ Church, Canterbury, with Benedictine monks, so that the metropolitan church itself became a monastic cathedral. He appears as a witness in royal diplomas and would have sat among the king’s counsellors. No substantial body of writing can be securely attributed to him. He must be distinguished from his more famous contemporary namesake, Ælfric of Eynsham, the abbot and homilist whose Catholic Homilies, Lives of Saints, and other works circulated widely in late Anglo-Saxon England.

Ælfric died on 16 November 1005. Medieval sources do not fully agree on his burial: Canterbury tradition and some chronicle notices place his tomb at Christ Church, Canterbury, while Abingdon house-history claimed that the archbishop was buried in his former abbey; later translation of remains between the two churches is also reported in secondary accounts. He was commemorated as a saint in English monastic calendars, with a feast on 16 November. His cult belongs to the pre-congregation era of local veneration rather than to a later formal papal canonization. Evidence for his personality and day-to-day administration is thin, consisting mainly of charter attestations, brief chronicle entries, and later abbey commemorations, so many aspects of his inner life remain unknown.
