Biography

Short Description

Ælfwold II, also rendered Alfwold or Ælfweald, was Bishop of Sherborne in England during the reign of Edward the Confessor. No reliable source records the year or place of his birth, and nothing is known of his family. He first appears in the historical record as a monk of the Old Minster at Winchester, the Benedictine community reshaped in the tenth-century monastic reform associated with Saint Æthelwold. From that house he was chosen bishop of Sherborne and consecrated in 1045, succeeding Bishop Æthelric. The diocese then covered a large part of Wessex, with its cathedral at the ancient minster of Sherborne in Dorset.

The principal narrative source for his character is William of Malmesbury’s early-twelfth-century Gesta Pontificum Anglorum. William presents Ælfwold as a bishop who never abandoned the monastic way of life and whose piety was marked by an ardent personal devotion to two English saints: Swithun, whose shrine stood in Ælfwold’s former monastery at Winchester, and Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. William relates that the bishop kept a painted image of Saint Cuthbert in his bedchamber, addressed it as if the saint were present, and recited Cuthbert’s liturgical office daily from memory. On his deathbed he is said to have had the image brought to him, to have kissed it, and to have committed his soul to Cuthbert’s care.

Ælfwold’s episcopate coincided with pressure on the smaller West Saxon sees to amalgamate. Herman, bishop of neighbouring Ramsbury, sought a more secure seat; after Ælfwold’s death Herman obtained Sherborne as well, holding the two dioceses together until the later transfer of the see to Salisbury. Ælfwold himself left little trace in royal diplomas or in the political narrative of Edward’s reign. The sources give the impression of a diocesan prelate whose reputation rested on personal holiness rather than on public or administrative prominence. No writings of his own survive, and the internal history of the Sherborne community in his time is poorly documented.

He died in 1058 and was buried at his cathedral church, later known as Sherborne Abbey. A local cult grew up around his memory, and he was venerated as a saint in the West Country. Medieval liturgical calendars assign him a feast on 25 March. Like many English saints of the late Anglo-Saxon period, he was never the object of a formal papal canonization, a process that had not yet become universal. His cult remained regional and is attested chiefly through later hagiographical notices and calendar entries rather than through a contemporary vita. The portrait that remains is therefore that of a Benedictine monk-bishop of eleventh-century Wessex, remembered for Cuthbertine devotion, monastic habit, and a reputation for sanctity that persisted after the Norman Conquest.
