Biography
Liberat Weiß, born Johann Laurentius Weiß on 4 January 1675 in the village of Konnersreuth in the Upper Palatinate of Bavaria, was a German Franciscan priest and missionary of the early eighteenth century. He entered the Order of Friars Minor and took the religious name Liberatus (Liberat). After his formation and priestly ordination he volunteered for missionary work at a period when the Holy See was again attempting to open relations with Christian Ethiopia, whose church had long been separated from Rome.
In the early 1700s Pope Clement XI entrusted Franciscan friars with a mission to Ethiopia. Latin clergy had been expelled in the 1630s after a short and contested Jesuit presence under the Portuguese, and the imperial capital at Gondar remained firmly aligned with Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity. Weiß traveled to the Horn of Africa with companions that included the Italian Franciscans Samuel Marzorati and Michele Pio Fasoli. The group made its way to Gondar in the highlands, where they sought to minister and to promote reunion with the Catholic Church.
Their presence met determined opposition from Ethiopian Orthodox clergy and court circles, who regarded the Latin missionaries as doctrinally unacceptable and as a political risk. Amid religious controversy and instability at the imperial court, the three friars were seized. On 3 March 1716 they were put to death by stoning in Gondar. Catholic tradition has treated their deaths as martyrdom for the faith. Beyond the circumstances of the mission and the execution, the surviving record of Weiß’s personal life is limited; he is known chiefly as the Bavarian member of this small Franciscan party.
Veneration of the three Franciscan martyrs of Ethiopia continued within the order and among Catholics. On 20 November 1983 Pope John Paul II beatified Liberatus Weiß together with Samuel Marzorati and Michele Pio Fasoli. Their liturgical commemoration is kept on 3 March. They have not been canonized. They are remembered as witnesses to early modern Catholic missionary effort in Ethiopia rather than as figures surrounded by an extensive legendary cycle.
