Biography

Short Description

Saint Liberata (Latin: Sancta Liberata) is a Christian saint commemorated with her sister Saint Faustina in the Roman Martyrology on 18 January, under the notice “at Como, the holy virgins Liberata and Faustina.” That liturgical entry is the firmest early witness to her cult. No contemporary chronicle, inscription, or dated charter records her birth, family, or the year of her death. Later medieval legendaries of the diocese of Como supply a narrative of two noble sisters who refused marriage, embraced consecrated virginity, and founded a women’s monastery in or near Como, in what is now Lombardy, during the fifth or sixth century. Those details belong to hagiographical tradition rather than to independently verified history, and chronological notices that place her death around 580 are conventional rather than documentary.

In the received story, Liberata and Faustina withdrew from secular life in the region of Como and established a community of virgins, sometimes later identified with a house of Santa Margherita. Subsequent writers associated the community with the Benedictine rule, but that identification cannot be confirmed for the period in which the sisters are supposed to have lived, when several monastic customs were in use in northern Italy. Liberata is generally said to have died first and Faustina shortly afterward; both were honoured as virgins. The name Liberata (“she who has been set free”) invited later pious interpretation, but there is no early evidence that she was invoked for any specific patronage beyond local veneration as a consecrated virgin of Como.

Their cult is ancient in the church of Como. Relics attributed to Liberata and Faustina have long been kept and exposed for veneration in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (the Duomo of Como), after earlier burial associated with their monastery. Local calendars, churches, and diocesan tradition in Lombardy preserved their memory, and they appear in Italian martyrologies and legendaries as a pair. They were never the principal patrons of the city—that role belongs to Saint Abundius of Como—but they formed part of the older sanctoral of the diocese. Canonization, in the modern papal sense, does not apply; like most saints of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, they entered the calendar through local cult and eventual recognition in the martyrology.

Liberata of Como must be distinguished from other holy women of the same or similar name. A separate, largely legendary figure known as Liberata, Librada, Wilgefortis, Uncumber, or Kümmernis was depicted in late-medieval art as a crucified, sometimes bearded princess who miraculously grew a beard to escape an unwanted marriage and was put to death by her father. That cult, attested in Spain, Portugal, France, the Low Countries, and German-speaking lands, has no reliable historical foundation and is not the same tradition as the Como virgins, although the shared name has caused confusion in art and popular piety. For Liberata of Como, the historian can affirm her early veneration at Como as a consecrated virgin, her joint feast with Faustina on 18 January, and the presence of relics under her name in that city’s cathedral, while remaining silent where the sources themselves are silent.
