Biography

Short Description

Saint Lidanus, known in Italian as San Lidano and sometimes called Lidano d'Antrodoco or Lidanus of Sezze, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Tradition records that he was born in 1026 at Antrodoco, a town in the Sabine hills of central Italy, in the region that is now the province of Rieti in Lazio. Almost nothing contemporary can be verified about his family or childhood. He entered the Benedictine order and followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, joining the monastic current that shaped religious life in the Italian peninsula in the decades around the Gregorian Reform. He is not recorded as a bishop, and he held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see.

In the later part of his life Lidanus settled in the countryside of Sezze, an ancient Volscian town in southern Lazio overlooking the Pontine plain. There he is remembered as the founder or restorer of a monastery dedicated to Saint Cecilia, of which he became abbot. Local memory, which cannot always be controlled by surviving documents, associates him with the care of the rural population and with attempts to improve the unhealthy wetlands of the Pontine Marshes, a landscape long marked by malaria and difficult cultivation. Whether or not specific drainage works can be proved from charters, this image of the abbot as both monk and benefactor of a marshland people became the core of his later cult.

Lidanus died at Sezze on 2 July 1118. He was buried in connection with his monastic foundation; in later centuries his relics were venerated in the cathedral of Sezze, where he is honored as the city's principal patron. His feast day is 2 July. No substantial contemporary biography is known to survive, and the outline of his career rests on later liturgical texts, civic tradition, and the continuity of devotion at Sezze and, more modestly, in his native Antrodoco. His public identity is that of a Benedictine abbot, and there is no evidence of marriage or of children.

The cult of Lidanus has remained essentially local. Sezze has long treated him as its protector, and religious and civic observances around his feast have formed part of the town's calendar. Like many Italian holy abbots of the high Middle Ages, he belongs to the large group of saints whose sanctity was first recognized by popular and diocesan cult rather than by a well-documented papal canonization of the later medieval type. Within the limits of the sources, he stands as a representative monastic founder of central Italy, remembered for the Rule, for a house under the patronage of Saint Cecilia, and for service to a difficult rural landscape rather than for high ecclesiastical office.
