Biography

Short Description

Lino Maupas, known in religion as Padre Lino, was a French-born Capuchin Franciscan friar who spent his mature life in the Italian city of Parma and became locally renowned for charity toward prisoners and the poor. He was born Auguste Maupas on 30 August 1866 in La Tour-d'Aigues, a commune in the Vaucluse of Provence, into a modest rural Catholic family. Drawn to the Franciscan vocation, he left France for Italy, entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, received the religious name Lino, completed his formation, and was ordained a priest. He was then assigned to the Capuchin community in Parma, which remained his home until death.

In Parma he combined conventual life with an extensive ministry beyond the cloister. He visited the municipal prison regularly, bringing the sacraments, hearing confessions, and offering material help to inmates and their families. He also aided factory workers and the urban poor amid the social changes of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Italy, including the years around the First World War. True to the Capuchin reform, he lived in strict personal poverty, wore a simple habit, and was often seen collecting alms or distributing food. Contemporaries described him as humble, approachable, and wholly dedicated to those on the margins.

Padre Lino continued this work until his final illness. He died in the Capuchin convent of Parma on 14 May 1924. His funeral drew large crowds, including many of the poor and former prisoners he had served, and popular devotion to him began at once. A cause for beatification was later introduced by the Capuchins and the diocese of Parma. His remains have been kept in the Capuchin church in Parma, where local veneration has continued. He is remembered as a concrete embodiment of Franciscan charity toward prisoners and the working poor in early twentieth-century northern Italy.
