Biography

Short Description

Lludd Llaw Eraint (“Lludd of the Silver Hand”) is a figure of medieval Welsh legend and Celtic myth, not a historically documented person and not a Christian saint. Scholars treat him as the Welsh counterpart of the Irish king Nuada Airgetlám of the Tuatha Dé Danann and as a later reflex of the Celtic god Nodens, who is attested in Roman Britain by dedications at the temple complex at Lydney Park in Gloucestershire. The earlier Welsh form of the name is Nudd; the shift to Lludd is explained as an allophonic change. He is regularly presented as a son of Beli Mawr. Because he belongs to myth and to the constructed “British history” of the Middle Ages, no verified year of birth or death, place of birth, or place of burial can be established from reliable historical evidence.

The principal medieval narrative attached to him is Cyfranc Lludd a Llefelys (“The Adventure of Lludd and Llefelys”), preserved in thirteenth-century Welsh manuscripts associated with the Mabinogion and also interpolated into some Welsh versions of Geoffrey of Monmouth. In that tale Lludd son of Beli is king of Britain; his brother Llefelys becomes king of France by marriage. Britain is afflicted by three plagues: the Coraniaid, who hear every whisper; a scream every May Eve that causes terror and barrenness, produced by two fighting dragons; and a magician who steals the provisions of the king’s court. Lludd, following counsel that Llefelys gives through a brass horn so that they will not be overheard, overcomes each plague. The story is a medieval literary composition drawing on older insular motifs, not a chronicle of datable events.

The epithet Llaw Eraint links him to the Irish tradition in which Nuada loses an arm in battle and receives a silver prosthesis, a wound that temporarily unfits him for kingship until a flesh arm is restored. Welsh sources do not preserve a full independent version of that episode for Lludd, but the epithet and the equation with Nuada are standard in Celtic scholarship. Under the name Nudd he is the father of Gwyn ap Nudd, a major figure of the Welsh Otherworld, associated with Annwn and with the fair folk. Welsh tradition also names Edern ap Nudd (who appears in Arthurian narrative such as Geraint ac Enid) among his sons; Owain ap Nudd and the maiden Creiddylad are sometimes attached to the same paternal line. These relationships are genealogical and mythological, not historically verified family history.

Geoffrey of Monmouth’s twelfth-century Historia Regum Britanniae presents a King Lud, son of Heli (Beli), who refortifies Trinovantum, which is thereafter called Kaerlud and identified with London; Ludgate and a burial at London are part of that legendary topography. Later tradition often conflates Geoffrey’s Lud with Lludd Llaw Eraint, although Geoffrey does not give the silver-hand epithet. Lludd appears in the Welsh Triads and in genealogical tracts as a figure of the legendary British past. He was never a pope, patriarch, or member of a Christian religious order, and he has no feast day, canonization, beatification, or documented cult of patronage. What can be said with confidence is limited to the medieval texts, the Irish and Romano-British comparanda, and the scholarly consensus that Nudd/Lludd, Nuada, and Nodens belong to one mythological complex.
