Biography

Short Description

Lodovico Pavoni was born on 11 September 1784 in Brescia, then part of the Republic of Venice, to Alessandro Pavoni and Lelia Poncarali, members of the local nobility. He received a careful education and discerned a priestly vocation in youth. After theological studies he was ordained a priest on 21 February 1807. The Napoleonic years and their aftermath had left many families in northern Italy in hardship, and Pavoni soon directed his ministry toward poor and neglected boys, offering catechesis, recreation, and moral formation through an oratory.

In 1818 he was appointed a canon of Brescia Cathedral and served as secretary to Bishop Gabrio Maria Nava. He obtained the former monastery and church of Saint Barnabas, where in 1821 he established an institute that joined human and Christian education with training in skilled trades. Boys learned printing, typography, engraving, and other crafts so that they might become self-supporting. Pavoni also gave particular attention to deaf children, providing specialized instruction when such care was still uncommon. His printing shop issued liturgical books, school texts, and popular religious works, and he treated the press as an instrument of the apostolate.

Pavoni came to believe that a stable religious family of priests and brothers was needed to continue this work. After a long preparation, the Congregation of the Sons of Mary Immaculate received diocesan approval in 1847. Its members, later called Pavonians, dedicated themselves to the education of youth, especially the poor, and to crafts including printing. He insisted on a family spirit, thorough vocational training, and respect for the dignity of labor.

In March 1849 Brescia rose against Austrian rule in the Ten Days of Brescia. To shield his boys from bombardment and street fighting, Pavoni led them to the village of Saiano in the nearby hills. Weakened by exhaustion and exposure, he contracted pneumonia and died there on 1 April 1849, Palm Sunday that year, in his sixty-fifth year.

Devotion to him continued among those formed in his institutes. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 14 April 2002 and canonized by Pope Francis on 16 October 2016. The Sons of Mary Immaculate remain active in education, vocational training, and pastoral work in Italy and elsewhere, carrying forward his concern for young people at the margins of society.
