Biography

Alojzij Grozde, known as Lojze Grozde, was born on 27 May 1923 in the village of Tržišče in Lower Carniola (Dolenjska), then in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. He came from a poor rural Catholic family. His father died while he was still a child, and he was raised under straitened circumstances by his mother. Showing both piety and academic ability, he was sent to Ljubljana to board and study at the classical gymnasium conducted by the Salesians of Don Bosco. There he became known as a gifted student of literature and a writer of verse, and he took an active part in Catholic Action, the lay apostolate that sought to form young Catholics in faith and public witness during a period of growing ideological pressure.

The Second World War brought occupation and partition of Slovenian lands among Italian, German, and Hungarian authorities, together with a bitter internal conflict in which communist-led Partisans fought occupiers and also targeted many who were identified with the Catholic Church and with non-communist political currents. Grozde remained a committed member of Catholic Action and continued his studies in Ljubljana. In late December 1942 he left the capital to spend the Christmas season with his family. While traveling through the countryside of Lower Carniola he was seized by Partisans. He was nineteen years old.

He was interrogated and killed on the night of 31 December 1942–1 January 1943 near the settlement of Mirna. His body was later found in a wooded area and showed signs of violent death; the beatification process treated the killing as martyrdom in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred for the faith, on account of his known Catholic activism and the anti-religious character of the movement that murdered him. Public cult was impossible under the postwar communist regime in Yugoslavia, but private devotion among Slovenian Catholics continued.

After Slovenia’s independence the cause was advanced. Pope Benedict XVI recognized Grozde’s martyrdom, and on 13 June 2010 he was beatified at a Mass in Celje celebrated by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone as papal legate. Blessed Lojze Grozde is remembered as a young lay witness of fidelity to Christ amid the ideological violence of the twentieth century in Central Europe. He has not been canonized.
