Biography

Short Description

Lojze Kozar, baptized Alojzij Kozar, was born on 16 February 1910 in Veržej, a settlement in Lower Styria that then belonged to Austria-Hungary and today lies in northeastern Slovenia. He became a Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Lavant, whose seat was at Maribor. After theological studies he was ordained to the priesthood in 1935. From that time he exercised ordinary parish ministry in the Slovene Styrian countryside, in the same region in which he had been born. He was a secular (diocesan) cleric, not a member of a religious order, and he never held episcopal office.

The political history of his adult life was that of the Slovene lands across the twentieth century. He began his priesthood in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the Second World War, Lower Styria was occupied and annexed by Nazi Germany, a period in which Slovene language, institutions, and clergy were subjected to severe pressure. After 1945 he continued to serve under the socialist Yugoslav state, in which the Catholic Church was legally restricted and often viewed with official suspicion. Kozar remained a working parish priest rather than a public prelate; later writers distinguish him as Lojze Kozar Sr. from his nephew Lojze Kozar Jr., who likewise became a priest in the Slovene Church.

Alongside pastoral duties he wrote extensively in Slovene. His books included catechetical and devotional works, accounts of the saints, and literature addressed to children and young readers. He also translated into Slovene. In a period when Catholic publishing in Slovenia operated under constraint, such writing served both religious instruction and the maintenance of a Slovene Catholic literary culture. English-language documentation of his individual titles and parish assignments remains thin; his standing is primarily that recorded in Slovene biographical and church sources as a regional priest-writer of the Maribor church.

Kozar died on 11 August 1999 in Maribor, in independent Slovenia, at the age of eighty-nine. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no feast day or patronage is attached to his name in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. He was neither pope nor patriarch. His historical significance lies in local pastoral service and in Slovene Catholic letters, not in high ecclesiastical office or in a formal cultus.
