Biography

Short Description

Longin of Koryazhema (also known as Longinus of Koryazhemka or, in the French form given here, Longin de Koriajemka) was a sixteenth-century Russian Orthodox monk and locally venerated saint of the Russian North. Almost nothing can be established with certainty about his origins. Surviving notices do not record a birth year, family, or place of birth, and later attempts to attach him to a particular noble house or to a famous earlier cloister remain unproven. He belongs to the well-attested movement of monastic founders who, in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, established small communities in the forested river basins of the Northern Dvina and Vychegda, a region then under the ecclesiastical orbit of Vologda and Veliky Ustyug and the political authority of Muscovy.

According to the traditional account preserved in Russian monastic and diocesan sources, Longin settled in 1535 on the Koryazhemka (Koryazhema) River, a tributary of the Vychegda, in what is now the vicinity of the town of Koryazhma in Arkhangelsk Oblast. There he founded a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, later known as the Nikolo-Koryazhemsky or Koryazhemsky Monastery. Some later hagiographical notices associate him with prior residence at a northern Russian house—occasionally the Pavlo-Obnorsky Monastery is named—but such links are not documented in contemporary charters and should be treated as later tradition rather than proven biography. The foundation itself, dated to 1535, is the most securely attested fact of his career.

Longin is remembered as an ascetic who combined prayer with the physical labor of clearing forest and organizing a small brotherhood. He died, according to the received chronology of the Russian Church, in 1540, and was buried at the monastery he had founded. Subsequent generations regarded his relics as holy and they became a focus of local pilgrimage, though the precise dates of any uncovering or translation of the relics are reported inconsistently in later sources and cannot be fixed with confidence. He is commemorated in the Russian Orthodox calendar on 10 February and is also remembered among the saints of the Vologda and northern Russian lands. He was venerated as a prepodobny (venerable monk), not as a hierarch.

The Koryazhemsky Monastery continued after his death and in the following centuries became a notable house in the Vychegda region, at times enjoying the patronage of local merchants and landowners. The modern town of Koryazhma grew up around the monastic site. There is no evidence that Longin was a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and as a monk he is documented as living the celibate monastic life; nothing reliable is known of any marriage or children before he entered religion. Because the written dossier is late and sparse, a cautious historian must distinguish the reasonably secure outline—a mid-sixteenth-century monastic founder on the Koryazhemka who died about 1540 and was thereafter honored locally—from the fuller legendary vitae that later piety supplied.
