Biography

Lorenzo da Villamagna, known in secular life as Lorenzo de' Marzi, was born in 1476 in Villamagna, a town in the Abruzzo (province of Chieti) in central Italy, then part of the Kingdom of Naples. He entered the Observant branch of the Order of Friars Minor, the reform current within the Franciscan family that insisted on a stricter living of the Rule of Saint Francis. Formed in Observant conventual life, he was ordained and became a preacher, the apostolate for which Observant friars of his generation were widely employed in the towns and countryside of the Italian peninsula.

In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries he preached in various parts of Italy, with particular activity in Abruzzo and neighboring regions of the Kingdom of Naples. Hagiographical tradition presents him as an austere religious, given to prayer, penance, and the moral conversion of his hearers. He belonged to the generation of Observant preachers who worked for Catholic reform from within, in the decades around the Fifth Lateran Council and the opening of the Protestant Reformation, though his own ministry remained popular and regional rather than conciliar or diplomatic. Surviving historical notices of his career are relatively sparse; later Franciscan chronicles and local devotion preserve his memory more fully than contemporary archival documentation. Anecdotal miracles and highly detailed episodes found in later pious literature cannot always be independently verified from sixteenth-century sources.

Lorenzo died in Ortona, on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, on 6 June 1535, and was buried in that city, where a cult developed around his tomb among the faithful and the Franciscan community. Devotion to him remained especially associated with Villamagna, his birthplace, and with Ortona, the place of his death. In the nineteenth century Pope Pius IX confirmed the immemorial cult paid to him, thereby recognizing him as Blessed. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 6 June. He has not been canonized and is not recorded as having held episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office.
