Biography

Short Description

Louis-Marie Baudouin was born on 2 August 1765 in Montaigu, in the Vendée of western France. He grew up in a strongly Catholic region in the last years of the Ancien Régime and entered the seminary of Luçon, the diocesan seminary serving that part of western France. He was ordained a priest on 19 September 1789, only weeks after the Revolution had begun to recast the legal position of the Church. When the Civil Constitution of the Clergy required an oath that many Catholics regarded as schismatic, he refused it and remained among the non-juring clergy, thereby exposing himself to the penalties laid on refractory priests.

During the 1790s, and especially amid the Wars of the Vendée and their repression, he lived in hiding and continued a clandestine ministry. Like other non-juring priests in the west of France, he celebrated Mass and administered the sacraments in secret, often in farms, private houses, and rural refuges, at serious personal risk. The Concordat of 1801 between Napoleon and the Holy See restored a measure of legal existence to public Catholic worship. Baudouin then resumed open pastoral work and was placed at Chavagnes-en-Paillers in the Vendée, which became the lasting centre of his apostolate and of the communities he later founded.

At Chavagnes he concentrated on Christian education and on rebuilding priestly formation after the Revolutionary destruction of seminaries and religious houses. In 1802, together with Charlotte-Gabrielle Ranfray (in religion Mother Saint-Benoît), he co-founded the Ursulines of Jesus (Ursulines de Jésus), a congregation of women religious devoted to teaching and to the care of the sick and the poor. He also developed a school for boys that functioned as a college and a source of vocations. In the 1820s he established a congregation of priests, the Sons of Mary Immaculate (Fils de Marie Immaculée), also known as the Chavagnes Fathers, for education, parish ministry, and missions. These foundations belonged to the wider Catholic reconstruction of early nineteenth-century France, particularly in a region that had suffered intense religious disruption.

Baudouin spent the remainder of his life at Chavagnes-en-Paillers, directing his educational works and the two congregations associated with his name. He died there on 12 February 1835. A cause for beatification was later introduced. Pope John Paul II declared him Venerable on 20 December 1999, recognizing heroic virtue; he has not been beatified or canonized. The Ursulines of Jesus and the Sons of Mary Immaculate continued after his death, and Chavagnes-en-Paillers has remained closely identified with his memory and with Catholic schooling in the Vendée.
