Biography

Short Description

Louis Martin is identified as a Catholic lay brother, that is, a man who entered a religious institute, professed the evangelical counsels, and was not ordained a priest. In monastic and congregational history such brothers (fratres conversi or frères lais) ordinarily performed the manual, domestic, and logistical labor of the house or the mission, while priests and choir monks fulfilled the liturgical and sacramental offices. The designation distinguishes him in catalogues from other men named Louis Martin. It also distinguishes him from the well-known Saint Louis Martin of Bordeaux, Alençon, and Lisieux, a married watchmaker and the father of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who never became a religious brother.

Reliable, widely cited historical and hagiographical sources do not furnish a verified year of birth, place of birth, congregation, or date and place of death that can be assigned to this particular lay brother without speculation. The name is common in French-speaking Catholic Europe, and several public biographies exist for homonyms in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; none of those lives can be tied here to a professed brother on the basis of a published necrology or order chronicle. For that reason birth, death, and burial fields are left blank rather than filled by conjecture.

No feast day, patronage, beatification, or canonization can be documented for a distinct Louis Martin, lay brother, in the principal modern lists of saints and blesseds. If a private or local reputation for holiness attached to a brother of this name inside a given monastery or missionary congregation, that cult has not been corroborated from the reference literature used for this notice. He was not a pope or a patriarch.

Obscure lay brothers were often commemorated only in internal obituaries. Until a primary notice from a named institute is identified and checked, the only historically responsible statement is that this Louis Martin belonged to the state of life of a non-ordained religious, and that more precise biographical particulars remain unverified.
