Biography

Short Description

Louis Querbes was born in Lyon, France, on 21 August 1793, while the city was in revolt against the National Convention and on the eve of the severe repression that followed. Public Catholic worship in Lyon was then illegal or extremely hazardous, and he was baptized in secret. After the Concordat of 1801 restored a legal framework for the Church in France, he pursued ecclesiastical studies in the Archdiocese of Lyon and was ordained a priest in 1816. His early ministry was exercised in Lyon itself, in a Church that was rebuilding parishes, seminaries, and schools after more than a decade of revolutionary disruption.

In 1822 he was appointed parish priest of Vourles, a village south of Lyon whose church and Christian life had been left in a poor state by the revolutionary years. Querbes worked to restore the parish, revive sacramental practice, and provide catechesis for children who had grown up with little formal religious teaching. Convinced that elementary schooling and Christian doctrine had to be joined together, and lacking enough teachers for that purpose, he gathered young men to serve as catechists and schoolmasters. From this practical need he developed the idea of a stable community whose members would be both educators and men of religious life.

In 1831 he founded the Clerics of Saint Viator, placing the congregation under the patronage of Saint Viator, a fourth-century lector and catechist associated with the Church of Lyon. The institute, which received diocesan approval, was composed of priests and brothers living in community and dedicated to the Christian education of youth and to parish catechetical work. Querbes remained pastor of Vourles and superior of the congregation, writing constitutions, forming members, and opening schools in the Lyon region. The community was small and poor in its first years and had to clarify its identity between diocesan service and religious life. In the 1840s, at the request of Bishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal, the first Viatorians left France for Canada, arriving in 1847; they established colleges and schools, notably in the area of Joliette, and this Canadian foundation became a major extension of his work.

Querbes died at Vourles on 1 September 1859. He was not beatified or canonized. His historical importance lies in the foundation of a teaching congregation in nineteenth-century France that combined priests and brothers in catechesis and education, and in the subsequent spread of the Clerics of Saint Viator to Canada and later to other countries. He belongs to the generation of French priests who, after the Revolution, sought to rebuild Catholic life through schools, parish work, and new religious communities.
