Biography

Short Description

Louise of Savoy was born on 28 December 1462 as a princess of the House of Savoy, one of the leading dynasties of the western Alps in the fifteenth century. Her father was Amadeus IX, Duke of Savoy, a ruler later beatified for personal piety and charity toward the poor. Her mother was Yolande of Valois, daughter of King Charles VII of France and Marie of Anjou, and sister of King Louis XI. Louise thus belonged both to the Savoyard ducal house and to the French royal family. She grew up at the courts of the duchy during a period when Savoy stood between France, Burgundy, and the Italian states. Later accounts of her life consistently stress the religious character of her immediate family, especially the reputation of her father.

In 1479, when she was about seventeen, she was married to Hugh of Chalon (Hugues de Chalon), a nobleman of the house of Chalon-Arlay and lord of Nozeroy. The marriage was a dynastic alliance linking Savoy to a lineage also connected with the Principality of Orange. Hugh died in 1490. Louise, still a young widow and with no children recorded in standard genealogies of Savoy or Chalon, did not contract a second marriage. She instead left court life for the cloister, a course taken by a number of high-born widows in the late Middle Ages who entered observant Franciscan communities.

She became a nun of the Order of Saint Clare, the Poor Clares, at the monastery of Orbe in the Pays de Vaud, territory then under Savoyard rule and today in Switzerland. The Poor Clare rule, derived from Saint Clare of Assisi, required enclosure, poverty, and a life of prayer and penance. Hagiographical tradition holds that Louise, despite her princely origin, accepted the austerity of the order, undertook humble tasks, and was noted for obedience and devotion. She remained in the community at Orbe for the rest of her life.

She died at Orbe on 24 July 1503. Local and Franciscan memory of her sanctity continued after her death. In 1839 Pope Gregory XVI confirmed her immemorial cult, an act that in the canonical practice of that period constituted beatification. She is therefore styled Blessed Louise of Savoy and is commemorated on 24 July, the anniversary of her death. She was not later canonized, and standard Catholic reference works do not attach a list of specific patronages to her name.
