Biography

Short Description

Louise-Thérèse de Montaignac de Chauvance was born on 14 May 1820 in Le Havre, in northern France, the fifth of six children of Raimond de Montaignac de Chauvance, a civil servant, and Anna de Raffin. She was baptized on the day of her birth. A substantial part of her childhood was spent not in the port city of her birth but in Nevers, where she was raised in large measure by her maternal aunt, a devout woman whose example formed the girl’s piety. From an early age she was drawn to the Eucharist and to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a spirituality then spreading widely in nineteenth-century France. She made her First Communion in 1833 and received a Christian education in a religious boarding school. In adolescence she contracted a serious disease of the bone that caused intense and lasting pain and left her with a permanent physical disability. Ill health remained a constant of her life and later prevented her from entering a traditional enclosed convent, though it did not diminish her desire for a consecrated life.

Unable to become a Carmelite as she had hoped, she made a private vow of perpetual chastity in 1843 and resolved to live a life of reparation and apostolic work in the world. The death of her aunt in 1845 left her with a spiritual charge to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart. In the following years she lived with members of her family, including a long residence in Montluçon in the Bourbonnais from the late 1840s. There she taught catechism, visited the sick and the poor, and gathered companions for prayer and adoration. Under Jesuit spiritual direction she gradually formed a pious association of women who offered themselves as oblates to the Heart of Jesus, combining contemplative prayer with works of charity and the Christian formation of youth. The association took more definite shape in the 1860s as a structured work of reparation and apostolate rather than a conventional cloistered community, reflecting both her own physical limitations and the pastoral needs she saw around her.

In 1874 the Bishop of Moulins approved the statutes of the new institute, the Oblates of the Heart of Jesus, and Louise-Thérèse was named its first superior. The congregation, of diocesan right during her lifetime, was dedicated to the glory of the Heart of Jesus through adoration, reparation, and apostolic service, especially the education of girls and care of the needy. She governed the young community with an emphasis on interior life, fidelity to the Church, and gentleness of government, even as her own health continued to decline. Houses and works multiplied modestly in the diocese while she trained the first sisters in the spirit of the institute. In her final years she suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed, yet she continued to guide her sisters by word and example until her death.

Louise-Thérèse de Montaignac died in Moulins on 27 June 1885. The Oblates of the Heart of Jesus later received pontifical approval and spread beyond France. Her cause of beatification was introduced in the twentieth century; she was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 November 1990. The Catholic Church commemorates her on 27 June. She is remembered as a foundress who, despite chronic illness and the social constraints of a laywoman of her class and century, gave institutional form to an apostolate centered on the Sacred Heart, moving from a private vow and a pious association to a religious congregation without ever having been able to follow the enclosed vocation of her youth.
