Biography

Short Description

Luarsab I was a king of Kartli, the eastern Georgian kingdom whose political center was Tbilisi, and a member of the Bagrationi dynasty. He was the son of King David X of Kartli. His birth is conventionally placed in 1502 in later genealogical and encyclopedic reconstructions; contemporary chronicles do not preserve a fully independent, day-exact record of the event, and some accounts allow a slightly later date within the first decade of the sixteenth century. He came to the throne in the later 1520s or the mid-1530s, after Kartli had already been weakened by the breakup of medieval united Georgia into several rival crowns (Kartli, Kakheti, Imereti, and Samtskhe) and by the growing reach of the Ottoman Empire and Safavid Iran. The kingdom he inherited still claimed the prestige of the old Bagrationi monarchy, but its effective power was confined to Inner Kartli and adjoining districts, with Tbilisi repeatedly exposed to occupation or raid.

The dominant fact of his reign was Safavid pressure under Shah Tahmasp I, who sought to reduce Kartli to a tributary and strategically obedient province of Iran. Persian armies entered the country on several occasions in the 1540s and 1550s, wasting the countryside, carrying off captives, and at times holding Tbilisi. Luarsab refused the path taken by some Caucasian princes who accepted vassalage, hostages, and in certain cases conversion to Islam as the price of keeping a throne. He combined open resistance with withdrawal into the highlands when invasion forces were too strong to meet in the plain, and he tried, within the limits of Georgia’s fractured politics, to keep Kartli from being absorbed into the Safavid administrative system. His policy was inseparable from the defense of Georgian Orthodoxy, which remained the religion of the court and of the kingdom’s principal churches and monasteries.

The Ottoman–Safavid Peace of Amasya in 1555 assigned eastern Georgia, including Kartli and Kakheti, to the Persian sphere and western Georgia to Ottoman pretensions. Luarsab did not treat that partition as binding on his crown. He continued to oppose Safavid commanders operating from Arran and Ganja. The last campaign of his life was the Battle of Garisi in southern Kartli, fought against a force under Shahverdi Sultan, the Safavid beylerbey of Ganja. Georgian troops gained the upper hand in the field, but Luarsab was killed in the fighting. Georgian historical tradition dates the battle and his death to 1556; some later reconstructions that lean on Persian chronology prefer 1558. He was succeeded by his son Simon I, who spent much of the following decades at war with Iran, including long captivity at the Safavid court.

Luarsab was married to Tamar, a daughter of King Bagrat III of Imereti, a match that tied the eastern and western Bagrationi houses. Their children included Simon I of Kartli and David, who later reigned in Kartli as David XI and was known in Persian sources as Daud Khan; David’s eventual acceptance of Safavid suzerainty stood in sharp contrast to his father’s career. Luarsab I is remembered in Georgian historical writing as a king who chose resistance over accommodation when the great empires of the sixteenth century divided the Caucasus. He is not a canonized saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church—that dignity belongs to the later king Luarsab II, martyred in the early seventeenth century—and he founded no religious order. His importance is political and dynastic: he held Kartli to a line of armed independence at the moment when Ottoman–Safavid diplomacy had written the kingdom into the Persian sphere, and he left a succession through which that struggle continued.
