Biography

Short Description

Luc de Jérusalem (also known as Luke of Jerusalem or, in Georgian, Luka Ierusalimeli) was a thirteenth-century monk and martyr venerated in the Georgian Orthodox Church. Surviving notices of his life are brief and derive chiefly from later Georgian hagiographical tradition rather than from contemporary Latin, Greek, or Arabic chronicles. He is described as a native of Georgia, the medieval Christian kingdom in the Caucasus whose rulers and church had for centuries maintained a presence in the Holy Land through pilgrimage, endowment, and monastic foundations. The precise locality of his birth within Georgia, the names of his parents, and the year of his birth are not recorded in the sources that have come down to us.

In the course of the thirteenth century Luke made his way to Jerusalem and entered the Monastery of the Holy Cross, a Georgian house situated west of the city walls on a site long associated in Christian tradition with the tree from which the wood of the True Cross was taken. The monastery served as a spiritual and cultural center for Georgian monks and pilgrims. There Luke followed the Eastern monastic life of prayer, fasting, and liturgical service according to the rites familiar to the Georgian church. By this period the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem had fallen; the city and the surrounding territory were under the authority of the Mamluk sultans of Egypt. Christian communities, including foreign monastic groups, continued to exist but lived under the legal and social constraints imposed on non-Muslim subjects, and they were vulnerable to outbreaks of hostility.

Hagiographical accounts relate that Luke was arrested by the Muslim authorities. The reasons given in the tradition include his steadfast confession of the Christian faith and his refusal to convert to Islam. He is said to have been tortured and finally put to death. The year 1277 is the date customarily assigned to his martyrdom in Georgian ecclesiastical sources. Independent corroboration of the precise year and of the details of his passion from non-Georgian documents is lacking, a situation not unusual for individual monastic martyrs of the period whose memory was preserved locally rather than in official court or papal records.

After his death Luke was remembered as a martyr by the Georgian Orthodox faithful. His name appears among the saints of the Georgian church, and he is honored in its liturgical calendar. He did not hold the office of bishop, patriarch, or any other hierarchical rank; the tradition presents him as a simple monk whose witness consisted in remaining faithful unto death. No extensive cult developed in the Latin West, and he is not prominently featured in the Roman Martyrology. Information concerning the place of his burial, any translation of relics, and specific patronages attached to his name is not preserved in the major accessible historical or liturgical sources. The figure of Luc de Jérusalem therefore stands as an example of the many Eastern monks whose lives and deaths were known primarily within their own national church and whose biographical details remain, for the historian, only partially recoverable.
