Biography

Short Description

Luchesio Modestini, known in Italian as Lucchese da Poggibonsi and often called Luchesius of Poggibonsi in Latin and English sources, is remembered as a thirteenth-century Tuscan lay penitent and as the first member of the Franciscan Third Order. Traditional accounts place his birth at Gaggiano, a village in the countryside of Poggibonsi in Tuscany, around the beginning of the 1180s; no contemporary record fixes the year with certainty. He settled in Poggibonsi, a market town on the Via Francigena between Florence and Siena, and made his living as a merchant, dealing especially in grain and other provisions. Later hagiography portrays his early career as marked by a hard-driving pursuit of profit and a reputation for avarice, a characterization that serves the conversion narrative but cannot be independently verified from civic documents of the period.

He married a woman named Buonadonna, who is associated with him in all the principal legends. According to Franciscan tradition, both spouses underwent a conversion of life after encountering Francis of Assisi, who is said to have preached in the region in the early thirteenth century, often placed around 1213. Moved to penitence, Luchesio is described as abandoning unjust gain, opening his stores to the poor, and seeking a rule of life compatible with remaining in the married state. Francis is credited with clothing Luchesio and Buonadonna in a simple penitential habit and thus instituting them as the first tertiaries, or members of the Order of Penance that developed into the Third Order of Saint Francis. Whether the couple had children is not established by early sources; some later pious biographies mention children who died young, but that detail is not securely documented.

Thereafter Luchesio lived at Poggibonsi as a lay Franciscan, combining household life with fasting, prayer, and works of mercy. He is said to have visited the sick, distributed food in times of scarcity, and worked to reconcile factions in a region often disturbed by Guelf and Ghibelline conflict. Miracle stories, including healings, were attached to him already in medieval legend. Buonadonna is reported to have died shortly before her husband. The traditional date of Luchesio’s own death is 28 April 1260 at Poggibonsi. He was buried in the Franciscan church of that town; the convent and church later known as San Lucchese became the centre of his cult and the resting place of his relics.

Local veneration as a beato began soon after his death. His feast is kept on 28 April. He is honoured as the prototype of the Franciscan tertiary and is invoked as a patron of Poggibonsi and of the Secular Franciscan Order; some modern lists of patronage also associate him with grocers. He held no ecclesiastical office and was neither pope nor patriarch. He was not formally canonized in the modern sense; his cult as Blessed was later recognized by the Holy See, though sources disagree on the precise papal confirmation. The historical core of his life—a converted merchant of Poggibonsi who, with his wife, pioneered a lay Franciscan vocation—is consistent across Franciscan tradition, even where individual miracle stories and precise dates remain those of medieval hagiography rather than of archival proof.
