Biography

Short Description

Lucia Kim, known in Korean Catholic sources as Kim Nusia Lucia (김누시아 루치아), was a laywoman and virgin martyr of the Catholic Church in Korea who died in the Gihae persecution of 1839. She was born in 1818 in Korea under the Joseon dynasty, when the Catholic faith had been present in the country for only a few decades and was forbidden by law. The Korean Catholic community of the early nineteenth century was unusual in having been founded largely by lay scholars who encountered Christian books from China, and it often endured long stretches without resident clergy. Precise facts about Lucia Kim’s family, exact birthplace, and childhood are not preserved beyond her identity as a young unmarried Catholic woman; the surviving records treat her primarily in connection with her arrest and death rather than as the subject of a full life narrative.

In 1839 the Joseon court, during the regency of Queen Sunwon, launched a major campaign against Catholics known as the Gihae persecution. The state regarded Christianity as a threat to Confucian hierarchy and as a channel for foreign influence. Lucia Kim was arrested in the course of this crackdown, which struck especially hard at the Catholic community in and around Seoul. The acts of the Korean martyrs, later assembled for the beatification process from eyewitness reports and missionary compilations, present her as having refused to apostatize. Women detained in that persecution were commonly subjected to beating and to judicial tortures intended to force a recantation, including devices used to crush or dislocate the limbs.

She was executed by beheading on 26 September 1839 in Seoul, at about twenty-one years of age. Autumn executions that year were carried out at sites such as Seosomun, outside the city walls, where many of the 1839 martyrs died. As was usual for those put to death as criminals, honorable burial was typically denied, and no securely identified grave for her is recorded. Later Korean Catholics venerated these victims collectively; individual biographical detail for most of the lay women of 1839 remains thin compared with that available for a few better-documented clergy and lay leaders.

Lucia Kim was beatified on 5 July 1925 by Pope Pius XI among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs of the 1839 and 1846 persecutions. She was canonized on 6 May 1984 by Pope John Paul II in Seoul, together with Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and one hundred companions, the group known as the 103 Korean Martyrs. They are commemorated together on 20 September in the General Roman Calendar. What can be stated with confidence about her is limited to her status as a virgin laywoman, the year of her birth, and the date, place, and manner of her martyrdom in the Gihae persecution.
