Biography

Short Description

Lucia Mangano was born on 25 March 1894 in San Giovanni la Punta, a small town in the province of Catania on the island of Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. She came from a modest family and was raised in the Catholic faith that shaped ordinary Sicilian village life at the turn of the twentieth century. The region was characterized by agricultural labor, strong parish structures, and popular devotion. Beyond a Christian upbringing and an early attraction to consecrated life, few details of her childhood are recorded in the sources used for her cause.

Responding to a religious vocation, she entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, an institute active in Sicily and devoted to education and apostolic work in the tradition associated with Saint Angela Merici. As a professed sister she lived under the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Her years in community coincided with the First World War, the Fascist period in Italy, and the Second World War. She remained in her native eastern Sicily, occupied with the hidden duties of religious life rather than public office or notable external events.

The documentation assembled for her cause presents her as a religious of consistent faith, marked by humility, obedience to superiors, Eucharistic piety, and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. She combined contemplative prayer with the practical charity and educational work of her congregation. No widely attested public miracles or sensational mystical phenomena form the core of the official record; her reputation rests on the ordinary, persevering practice of the Christian virtues in community.

She died on 10 November 1946 in San Giovanni la Punta at the age of fifty-two. A reputation for holiness led the local Church to introduce her cause of beatification. After diocesan and Roman investigations, Pope Francis authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decree on her heroic virtues on 18 February 2017, thereby conferring the title of Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized. Her memory is preserved mainly within her congregation and in the diocese of Catania.
