Biography

Short Description

Lucia Schiavinato was an Italian Catholic laywoman of the twentieth century whose public memory rests on a life of practical charity toward people with mental illness and others who had been socially abandoned. She was born in 1900 at Cavarzere, in the low-lying agricultural country of the Venetian plain (Veneto). Her family belonged to the rural poor of that region, and her early years unfolded in a setting of farm labor, limited formal schooling, and the dense parish Catholicism typical of northern Italy before and after the First World War. Contemporary notices of her youth stress a serious religious temperament and an early inclination to serve the suffering rather than to follow the expected path of marriage and a conventional household.

As an adult she remained unmarried and lived as a consecrated layperson, without entering a canonical religious institute. In the middle decades of the century she settled in the Castelli Romani south of Rome, above all at Grottaferrata. There she began to take into her care men and women discharged from, or rejected by, psychiatric hospitals, as well as others whom families would no longer support. Italian asylums of that period were commonly overcrowded, poorly resourced, and deeply stigmatizing; Schiavinato’s answer was to form small, domestic communities in which the sick were treated as members of a household rather than as clinical cases. She spoke of those she assisted as her children. Daily life combined simple work, mutual assistance, and regular prayer, sustained by a spirituality of trust in Divine Providence and by Marian devotion.

The work slowly drew priests, religious, and lay collaborators. Houses of hospitality were opened and the service continued even as her own health failed. She remained personally involved in the care of residents until her death at Grottaferrata in 1976. She is little known outside certain Italian Catholic and local circles; she was never a public figure of national politics or of the institutional Church. After her death those who had lived with her promoted the memory of a hidden evangelical charity exercised in the pre-reform asylum era (the great Italian psychiatric reform associated with Franco Basaglia came only after she had died). A diocesan inquiry into her life and virtues was later introduced, and she is regarded among Catholics who remember her as a Servant of God. Foundations and houses inspired by her example continued to offer residential care and a measure of dignity to people with psychiatric disabilities, preserving the witness of a laywoman who sought to restore family-like belonging to some of the most excluded members of twentieth-century Italian society.
