Biography

Short Description

Lucia Wang Wang was a Chinese Catholic laywoman who was put to death for her faith in 1900 amid the Boxer Rebellion. She belongs to the group of one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China, comprising both Chinese faithful and foreign missionaries who died between the mid-seventeenth century and the 1930s. The majority of the Chinese members of this group, including Lucia Wang Wang, perished in the violent anti-Christian attacks that accompanied the Yihetuan uprising in northern China during the final years of the Qing dynasty. Surviving records concerning her are sparse, a situation typical of many rural Chinese Catholics of the era whose lives were documented chiefly in the reports of missionaries and in the oral tradition of local Christian communities.

The Boxer movement combined popular xenophobia, religious millenarianism, and opposition to the growing presence of Western powers and Christian missions. In 1900, with a measure of encouragement from the imperial court, Boxer bands and allied militias attacked mission stations, churches, and Christian villages across northern China. Catholics and Protestants alike were ordered to recant. Those who refused were frequently killed on the spot, sometimes after torture. Lucia Wang Wang was among the lay Christians who would not apostatize. Hagiographical notices that accompany the list of the 120 martyrs identify her as a widow, indicating that she had been married, though the name of her husband and any further family particulars have not been preserved in the standard sources.

After the restoration of order, the Catholic Church in China and the missionary institutes that had lost members gathered testimonies of the dead. In the twentieth century the Holy See examined these causes in several groups. A number of the victims of 1900 were beatified in the 1940s and 1950s. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized all one hundred and twenty together in St. Peter's Square, presenting them as a single cohort of witnesses whose blood had become the seed of the Church in China. Their common feast is kept on 9 July in the General Roman Calendar.

Beyond her identity as a Chinese Catholic widow martyred in 1900, almost nothing of Lucia Wang Wang’s personal history—her birthplace, the date of her birth, her occupation, or the precise manner and place of her execution—can be verified from readily available historical or liturgical sources. She is therefore honored less as an individually documented biography than as one voice within the larger communion of Chinese martyrs whose fidelity under persecution is commemorated by the universal Church.
