Biography

Short Description

Lucian of Antioch was a Christian presbyter, biblical scholar, and martyr of the late third and early fourth centuries, closely associated with the church of Antioch in Roman Syria. Ancient notices place his origin at Samosata in Commagene. Later hagiographical accounts report that he was orphaned young, received an education at Edessa, and adopted an austere manner of life before being ordained a priest at Antioch. He was never a bishop. Contemporary and near-contemporary writers, above all Eusebius of Caesarea, remember him as a presbyter distinguished for learning and for a severe personal discipline rather than for any episcopal office.

At Antioch Lucian became a leading teacher. Later tradition assigns him a formative place in the catechetical or exegetical school of that city, which stressed the literal and historical reading of Scripture in contrast to the more allegorical methods identified with Alexandria. His scholarly name is especially tied to work on the Greek Bible. He is widely connected with a recension of the Septuagint and, in some accounts, of the New Testament; the so-called Lucianic or Antiochene form of the text later had a deep influence on the Byzantine ecclesiastical tradition. The precise scope of his editorial labor cannot be reconstructed in detail from surviving evidence, but his reputation as a careful student of the biblical text is firmly rooted in the ancient sources.

Lucian’s theological legacy was contested even in antiquity. He was linked, at least by later critics, with the circle of Paul of Samosata, the controversial bishop of Antioch deposed in the later third century, and for a time he appears to have been out of communion with the wider church before being reconciled. In the fourth century both Arius and Eusebius of Nicomedia appealed to him as a teacher, and some clergy styled themselves Collucianists. Whether Lucian himself taught the doctrines afterward condemned as Arian remains a matter of historical debate. Hostile Alexandrian notices treat him as a forerunner of heresy; other ancient reports present him as dying in the peace and orthodoxy of the church. The safest conclusion is that he belonged to an Antiochene subordinationist climate of thought that several later parties claimed, and that the surviving evidence does not permit a full reconstruction of his own teaching.

During the persecutions of the early fourth century, in the reign of Maximinus Daia, Lucian was arrested and taken to Nicomedia, then an imperial residence in Bithynia. Accounts of his passion mix historical report with later legendary elaboration: they describe imprisonment, hunger, interrogation, a public defense of Christian belief, and refusal of food associated with pagan sacrifice. He died at Nicomedia; the traditional date is 7 January 312. Eusebius records the martyrdom of this Antiochene presbyter without the novelistic detail of the later passiones. Subsequent tradition held that his body was cast into the sea and afterwards recovered, and that he was buried at Drepanum on the Gulf of Nicomedia, a place Constantine later refounded or renamed Helenopolis. Lucian was commemorated as a saint in both East and West. Because so much of the later narrative cannot be independently confirmed, the most secure portrait remains that of a learned Antiochene priest, biblical reviser, and martyr of the last great Roman persecution, whose name was afterwards invoked by more than one theological party.
