Biography

Short Description

Saint Lucina is the name given in early Christian tradition to a pious Roman matron, or possibly to more than one woman of that name, remembered for charity toward imprisoned Christians and for providing burial for martyrs in the city of Rome. The historical record does not permit a single, securely dated biography. Later hagiography appears to have woven together several strands of memory attached to the name Lucina, a name that also designated an early Christian burial ground on the Appian Way. She is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on 30 June as a disciple of the Apostles who distributed her goods to the poor, visited Christians held in prison, buried the martyrs, and was herself laid to rest in a crypt she had prepared near the cemetery of Callistus. Modern historians treat this notice as a pious compilation rather than as a demonstrable life of one first-century woman.

Archaeology confirms that a burial area known as the Crypt or Cemetery of Lucina formed the oldest nucleus of the Catacomb of Callixtus on the Via Appia and was in use by the late second and early third centuries. The name indicates a donor or property owner, almost certainly a Christian woman of means, but it does not by itself identify her with the legendary disciple of the Apostles. A separate and widely circulated story, found in the late antique Acts of Saint Sebastian, presents Lucina as the devout woman who recovered the body of the martyr Sebastian after his execution in Rome, traditionally placed in the late third century under the emperor Diocletian, and buried him in the catacombs. Whether this Lucina is the same person as the donor of the crypt, or a literary figure modeled on the type of the charitable Roman widow, cannot be established from contemporary documents.

A further tradition, preserved in the Liber Pontificalis in connection with Pope Marcellus I in the early fourth century, describes a widow named Lucina who received the pope into her house on the Via Lata, the present Via del Corso in Rome. According to this account her dwelling became a place of worship, the titulus Lucinae, which later developed into the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina, one of the ancient titular churches of Rome. The same cycle of stories sometimes credits her with assisting in the burial of other martyrs and with turning her property to ecclesiastical use. These narratives belong to the genre of Roman passiones and pontifical legend. They reflect the real existence of early Christian house-churches and of female patrons of high social standing, but they do not yield a verifiable chronology or a single historical biography.

Because the cult is ancient, Lucina was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; her name entered the martyrology through local Roman veneration and the compilation of legendary acts. She is honored as a holy woman in the Roman tradition, associated with almsgiving, the care of prisoners, and the burial of the dead, though she did not acquire the extensive specialized patronages attached to more famous saints. Nothing reliable is known of her year of birth, her family of origin, or the year of her death. The most that can be said with caution is that one or more Christian women named Lucina, of prosperous and possibly senatorial rank, lived in Rome between the later second and the early fourth century, that their name remained attached to a major catacomb and to a titular church, and that the Church of Rome remembered them collectively as a model of lay female sanctity.
