Biography

Short Description

Lucinius, also attested in Latin as Licinius and in French as Lézin or Lesin, was a Frankish aristocrat who became bishop of Angers (Andegavum) in western Gaul in the later sixth century. He belongs to the large class of Merovingian prelates whose names survive in episcopal catalogues, local liturgy, and a much later saint’s life, rather than in a contemporary biography. No reliable source records an exact year of birth, and nothing securely identifies a town of origin more precise than the Angevin region of the Frankish kingdom. Modern historical writing therefore treats him as a real bishop of Angers while treating anecdotal episodes in the medieval vita as unverifiable.

Later Angevin tradition presents Lucinius as count of Anjou before he entered the clergy. The same legend states that he was betrothed to a noblewoman who died suddenly on the eve of the wedding, after which he took the event as a divine summons, received holy orders, and adopted an austere manner of life. No sixth-century charter or narrative confirms the betrothal, the comital title, or a formal marriage, and those details should not be treated as documented fact. His accession to the see of Angers is generally placed in the 580s, in the generation after the Angevin bishops known to Gregory of Tours. He was a diocesan bishop, not a monk of a named religious order, not a metropolitan of a patriarchal see, and not bishop of Rome.

As bishop he is remembered in local tradition for personal austerity, care of the poor, and the foundation or endowment of churches and religious houses in and around Angers. These are conventional themes of Merovingian episcopal hagiography and cannot be independently verified in detail. He died in office in the early seventh century; later writers often give a date around 610, but that figure is conventional rather than documentary. Tradition places his burial at Angers, in the church that later took his name (Saint-Lézin, earlier associated with John the Baptist). Relics attributed to him were kept there and were translated or dispersed in subsequent centuries.

The cult of Lucinius remained essentially diocesan. In the liturgical calendar of Angers his feast has been kept on 13 February. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization or beatification of the later medieval or modern type; his status as a saint rests on long-standing local cultus of the kind typical for Merovingian bishops. No early, reliable list of patronages—places, professions, illnesses, or causes—can be verified beyond his association with the church and city of Angers. A cautious account can affirm that a bishop of this name occupied the see of Angers in the later sixth century, died there in the early seventh, and became the focus of a durable Angevin cult under the names Lucinius, Licinius, and Lézin.
