Biography

Short Description

Lucius of Britain is a legendary king of the Britons, traditionally placed in the second century and credited in medieval Christian literature with requesting baptism from Rome and thereby introducing Christianity into Britain. He is not attested by any contemporary Roman, British, or ecclesiastical source, and modern historians treat him as a literary rather than a historical figure. The earliest known mention occurs in a sixth-century recension of the Liber Pontificalis, in the notice of Pope Eleutherius (whose pontificate is generally dated to the later second century). That brief entry states that Eleutherius received a letter from a British king named Lucius asking to be made a Christian. No independent second-century evidence confirms the letter, the king, or a royal conversion of Britain at that date.

The story was given wide currency in the early eighth century by Bede in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Bede repeated the Liber Pontificalis notice, located the episode in the time of Eleutherius and the emperors Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, and presented Lucius as the ruler who first obtained the Christian faith for Britain from Rome. Later Insular writers, including the compiler of the Historia Brittonum associated with Nennius, transmitted related versions. In Welsh tradition the figure appears as Lles map Coel (or Lles ap Coel), fitted into legendary genealogies of British kings. None of these accounts supplies a verifiable birthplace, death place, family, or year of birth or death; chronological details given by later authors are internally inconsistent and cannot be treated as historical dates.

In the twelfth century Geoffrey of Monmouth greatly expanded the legend in the Historia Regum Britanniae. He made Lucius the son and successor of King Coilus, described a formal embassy to Pope Eleutherius, and named missionaries (commonly Faganus and Duvianus, or Fugatius and Damianus in later retellings) who were said to have baptized the king and people and to have organized an ecclesiastical hierarchy, with metropolitan sees at London, York, and Caerleon. Geoffrey’s narrative, which also assigned Lucius a death date that cannot be reconciled with the known dates of Eleutherius, became the basis for numerous later chronicles, church foundation legends (including claims associated with St Peter’s, Cornhill, and with Gloucester), and royal genealogies. These elaborations belong to medieval historical romance rather than to recoverable second-century events.

A further medieval development identified, or confused, the British king with Saint Lucius of Chur, a missionary figure associated with Raetia and venerated at Chur in present-day Switzerland. That identification, which produced stories of a British king who left his throne to preach in the Alps and was martyred, is not supported by early evidence and is generally rejected by modern scholarship. Twentieth-century research, notably the suggestion associated with Adolf von Harnack, has argued that the original Liber Pontificalis notice may rest on a scribal confusion between Britannia and Britio (Birtha) of Edessa, possibly transferring to Britain a tradition connected with a ruler of Edessa and Pope Eleutherius. Whatever the origin of the notice, there is no reliable historical source for Lucius’s birth, death, marriage, children, burial, or cult as a canonized saint of the British church. He remains important as a vehicle through which medieval writers explained the apostolic or early Roman origins of Christianity in Britain, not as a documented second-century monarch.
