Biography

Short Description

Saint Ludan, also known as Ludain, Luden or Ludanus, is a Christian saint of the High Middle Ages whose biography rests almost entirely on later hagiographical tradition rather than on contemporary records. Tradition presents him as a man of noble birth from either Scotland or Ireland; medieval and early-modern sources disagree on the island of his origin and supply no verifiable place or date of birth. After the death of his father he is said to have distributed his inherited property to the poor and to have set out as a pilgrim for Jerusalem.

On the return journey from the Holy Land he passed through Alsace. There, according to the same tradition, he fell ill and died at the village of Nordhouse on 12 February 1202. His body was carried to the neighbouring settlement of Hipsheim and interred in the parish church. A local cult grew up around the tomb; Ludan was honoured as a confessor and pilgrim, and his feast came to be observed on 12 February.

No twelfth- or thirteenth-century charter, chronicle or necrology has been shown to mention him, so the precise details of his life and even the traditional year of his death cannot be confirmed independently of the later legend. He is not associated with any religious order and appears in the sources as a lay pilgrim rather than as a monk or cleric. Claims that he was a Scottish prince or an Irish chieftain’s son remain unsubstantiated.

His veneration stayed essentially regional, centred on Hipsheim and Nordhouse in Alsace. He was entered in some later martyrologies and in lists of Irish or Scottish saints who died on the Continent, but there is no evidence of a formal papal canonization. Recognition of his cult belongs to the older pattern of popular and local episcopal veneration rather than to the centralized processes of the later Middle Ages or the modern period.
