Biography

Short Description

Ludovico Morbioli was born in 1433 in Bologna, in the Papal States of northern Italy, to Francesco Morbioli and his wife Agnese. Surviving accounts say little about his childhood or education, but they agree that he belonged to the Bolognese citizenry rather than to the clergy or a religious house. In youth and early manhood he lived a worldly and dissipated life, devoted to vanity, fashionable dress, and the pleasures of a prosperous late-medieval city. He is not known to have held ecclesiastical office or to have received theological training; his later reputation as a preacher rested on lay penitential witness rather than on ordination or academic formation.

He married, though the name of his wife is not securely preserved in the principal sources, and the marriage is described as unhappy. Around 1462 he was struck by a grave illness that brought him near death. The crisis produced a sudden and lasting conversion. After he recovered, he abandoned his former manner of life and resolved to do public penance. He and his wife thereafter lived in continence; some accounts indicate that she came to accept, and even to support, his new vocation, though he increasingly lived apart from ordinary domestic routine in order to preach and to practice austerities.

Morbioli adopted a severe and highly visible penitential regime. He clothed himself in a distinctive white garment marked with a large red cross, went barefoot, and carried a staff, an appearance that contemporaries found eccentric and that sometimes drew mockery as well as attention. He entered the Third Order of Saint Francis and began to preach repentance in the streets and squares of Bologna and in other towns of Emilia-Romagna, including Modena and Ferrara. He called hearers to confession, amendment of life, and devotion to the Passion of Christ, and he supplemented preaching with fasting, night vigils, and other corporal penances. He remained a lay tertiary rather than a friar, and his ministry belonged to the tradition of late-medieval urban penitents and popular preachers rather than to the pulpit of a religious order’s church.

He died in Bologna on 9 November 1485 and was at once honored by local faithful as a holy man. Popular veneration continued in the city through the early modern period. On 24 October 1843 Pope Gregory XVI confirmed his cultus, an act equivalent to beatification. His feast is kept on 9 November. He was never canonized and acquired no widely recognized patronages; he remains a relatively obscure blessed, remembered chiefly in Bolognese and Franciscan tradition as an example of dramatic conversion and of lay penitential preaching in fifteenth-century northern Italy.
