Biography

Short Description

Ludwik Gietyngier was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Częstochowa who died in the Dachau concentration camp during the Second World War and was later beatified among the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 14 August 1904 in Żarki, in the Częstochowa region of Congress Poland, then under the Russian Empire. After priestly formation he was ordained for the newly erected Diocese of Częstochowa and served in parish ministry and as a catechist, teaching religion in schools connected with his diocese in the interwar years.

The German occupation of Poland from 1939 brought systematic repression of the Polish Church. Occupation authorities arrested large numbers of clergy, restricted public worship, and treated the Catholic priesthood as a support of Polish national life. Father Gietyngier continued pastoral work under those conditions. In 1941 he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Dachau in Bavaria, the camp the Nazi regime used as a principal place of imprisonment for Catholic clergy from occupied Europe.

Priest-prisoners at Dachau endured starvation rations, forced labor, exposure, and epidemic disease. Gietyngier died there on 30 November 1941, at the age of thirty-seven. His death belongs to the wider destruction of the Polish clergy under National Socialism, in which thousands of priests, religious, and seminarians perished in prisons and camps.

On 13 June 1999, during a Mass in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified 108 Polish Catholics killed in the war, including Ludwik Gietyngier, recognizing them as martyrs. The group is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Gietyngier is remembered as a secular priest of Częstochowa whose fidelity to his ministry ended in imprisonment and death in a concentration camp.
