Biography

Short Description

Ludwik Mzyk was born on 22 April 1905 in Kochłowice in Upper Silesia, then in the German Empire and now a district of Ruda Śląska in Poland. He came from a Catholic family in a borderland of mixed Polish and German character that passed to the restored Polish state after the First World War and the Silesian uprisings. Drawn to missionary religious life, he entered the Society of the Divine Word (Societas Verbi Divini), the congregation founded by Arnold Janssen. He completed the philosophical and theological formation required of its members and was ordained a priest.

In interwar Poland the Society of the Divine Word was still establishing houses and a novitiate. Mzyk was appointed novice master at Chludowo near Poznań and became a principal formator of Polish candidates for the congregation. His work was the spiritual direction, instruction, and community leadership of novices. Testimony gathered for his later cause of beatification presents him as a priest of personal austerity, loyalty to the Church, and care for the young men in his charge. The German invasion of September 1939 placed Polish clergy in immediate danger, above all in Greater Poland, which the Reich meant to annex and Germanize.

The Gestapo arrested Mzyk on 25 January 1940 and imprisoned him in Fort VII in Poznań, a nineteenth-century fort converted into a prison, interrogation centre, and killing site. Fort VII was among the earliest instruments of terror against the Polish elite in the annexed Wartheland. There he was interrogated and subjected to violence. On 20 February 1940 he was killed; he was thirty-four years old. Like many victims of Fort VII he left no securely identified grave, and the precise manner of death was reconstructed from fellow prisoners’ testimony and from the known practices of the camp.

The Catholic Church recognized him as a martyr killed in odium fidei in the Nazi persecution of the Polish Church. Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw together with 107 other Poles who died in the Second World War, the group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their liturgical memorial is 12 June. Mzyk has not been canonized. He is commemorated among Polish religious and in the Society of the Divine Word as a model of fidelity under persecution; standard hagiographical sources do not attach to him a list of particular patronages.
