Biography

Short Description

Ludwik Bartosik was born in 1909 in the village of Kokanin, in the Kalisz region of what was then the Russian-ruled portion of partitioned Poland. He received the baptismal name Ludwik and, on entering religious life, the name Pius. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Conventual (Conventual Franciscans) and was ordained a Catholic priest. His formation and early ministry belonged to a Polish Church that, after 1918, was rebuilding in a newly independent state, with a strong current of Marian devotion and a growing Catholic press.

Bartosik’s principal field of work was the Franciscan monastery of Niepokalanów, founded by Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe as a center of missionary publishing and of the Militia of the Immaculata. There he collaborated in the production of the Marian periodical Rycerz Niepokalanej (The Knight of the Immaculate) and related Catholic publications that reached a mass audience in interwar Poland. Franciscan and martyrological notices describe him as a writer, editor, and preacher, formed by Kolbe’s Marian apostolate and by the Franciscan use of the printed word. Niepokalanów was one of the largest religious communities in the country, and its magazines and newspapers were a notable feature of Polish Catholic life between the wars.

The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 brought Niepokalanów under Nazi occupation. Members of the community were harassed, and a number of friars were arrested. Bartosik was seized by the Gestapo, held in German prisons, and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp at Oświęcim. In the camp he suffered the conditions imposed on prisoner-priests and on Polish clergy more generally. He died there in December 1941. The Catholic Church regards his death as martyrdom under a regime that persecuted the Church and the priesthood. His remains were not given a known Christian burial; like those of many Auschwitz prisoners they were not recovered.

Pope John Paul II beatified him on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish victims of the Second World War, a group known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II, which included diocesan priests, religious men and women, and laypeople killed by the Nazi regime. Their collective liturgical commemoration is observed on 12 June. Bartosik has not been canonized. He is honored in the Conventual Franciscan order and in Polish Catholic memory as one of the religious of Niepokalanów who did not survive the camps, alongside better-known figures such as Maximilian Kolbe. Precise details of his family background, the exact date of his ordination, and the day-by-day course of his imprisonment are not all equally well documented in widely available sources; the outline of his life, his death at Auschwitz in 1941, and his beatification in 1999 is firmly established in the acts of the beatification and in standard hagiographical notices.
