Biography

Short Description

Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi was born in 1880 in Catania, on the island of Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of Italy. He was the son of Carlo Beltrame. While still a child he was entrusted in part to the care of a childless uncle, Luigi Quattrocchi, and thereafter used the compound surname Beltrame Quattrocchi. The family established itself in Rome, where Luigi received his education and studied law. After completing his legal studies he practiced as an attorney. He belonged to the milieu of Catholic professionals in the Italian capital and took part in associations of Catholic jurists, combining a secular career with a strong identification with the Church in an era when Italian Catholicism was rebuilding its public presence after the loss of the Papal States.

On 25 November 1905 Luigi married Maria Corsini in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Maria had been born in Florence in 1884 and was herself a writer and educator from a cultured Catholic family. The couple made their home in Rome and had four children. Filippo, the eldest, was ordained a priest; Stefania entered the Benedictines and took the religious name Maria Cecilia; Cesare became a Trappist monk; and Enrichetta remained a laywoman, active in Catholic Action and later a witness in her parents’ beatification process. The household was characterized by daily Mass, family prayer including the rosary, and a conscious effort to form the children in the faith. Later in their marriage, after their children had been born, Luigi and Maria mutually agreed to live in continence while continuing their life together as husband and wife.

Luigi’s apostolate was that of a layman in the world rather than that of a cleric or religious. He was involved in Catholic Action, supported the emerging Catholic scouting movement in Italy, and engaged in charitable and educational initiatives. The family lived through the upheavals of the first half of the twentieth century, including both world wars. During the Second World War their apartment in Rome was a place of hospitality and practical assistance for people in difficulty. Biographers describe him as a man of integrity in his legal work and of gentleness and firmness in family life. He did not enter the clergy or a religious order; his path was that of marriage, parenthood, and professional duty, offered as a Christian vocation in ordinary circumstances.

Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi died in Rome in 1951. Maria died in 1965. Their cause was introduced as a single cause for both spouses. On 21 October 2001 Pope John Paul II beatified them together during a ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square, the first time a married couple had been beatified as a couple in the history of the Catholic Church. Their memorial is kept on 25 November, the anniversary of their wedding. They have been presented by the Church as examples of conjugal holiness and of the universal call to holiness among the laity in the modern world. Their remains are kept at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Divine Love on the outskirts of Rome.
