Biography

Short Description

Luigi Calabresi was born in Rome in 1937. After completing legal studies, he entered the Italian state police as a commissioner and was posted to Milan in the later 1960s, serving in the political office of the questura. Those years saw student and labor unrest and the beginning of the prolonged political violence later known as the Years of Lead. Calabresi was a practicing Catholic and a lay public official; he did not belong to a religious order and never held episcopal or papal office. Associates later recalled his regular religious practice and his sense of duty in a polarized climate.

Following the bomb attack at the Banca Nazionale dell'Agricoltura in Piazza Fontana, Milan, on 12 December 1969, Calabresi was among the officers investigating anarchist groups. On 15 December 1969 Giuseppe Pinelli, an anarchist railway employee held for questioning, died after falling from a window of Milan police headquarters. Responsibility for that death was never established in a way that ended public controversy. Movements of the extra-parliamentary left, above all Lotta Continua, accused Calabresi of having caused or covered up Pinelli's death and waged a sustained press and street campaign against him, including the slogan that named him an assassin. Calabresi rejected the charge and brought defamation proceedings.

On the morning of 17 May 1972 Calabresi was shot and killed outside his home in Milan at the age of thirty-four. The assassination became a landmark crime of Italian terrorism. In later decades, after a former militant came forward, Italian courts convicted several people linked to Lotta Continua of organizing and executing the murder. The trials were lengthy and remain debated among historians and political commentators, but the judicial outcome treated the killing as a politically motivated assassination rather than a private crime.

Calabresi was married to Gemma Capra, and they had two sons, one of whom, Mario Calabresi, became a well-known journalist and writer. His widow and family worked for many years to defend his name and to stand with other families of victims of political violence. In Italian Catholic memory he has sometimes been presented as a Christian layman who paid with his life for service to the state; petitions and commemorations have occurred, yet he has not been beatified or canonized, and the Church has not assigned him a feast day or official patronages. The principal sources for his life are contemporary newspapers, police and court records, and subsequent historical studies of the Piazza Fontana case and of 1970s Italy.
