Biography

Short Description

Luigi Lenzini was born on 28 May 1881 in Fiuminata, a commune in the province of Macerata in the Marche region of central Italy. He received his ecclesiastical formation in the seminary of the Diocese of Fano, on the Adriatic coast of the Marche, and completed the usual course of philosophical and theological studies for the diocesan priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 19 September 1904 for that diocese. He remained a secular (diocesan) priest of Fano for the whole of his life and never entered a religious order.

In the years after ordination he was assigned to ordinary pastoral work in a largely agricultural society. The Marche of the early twentieth century was marked by rural poverty, emigration, and the growing presence of socialist and later communist organizations among farm laborers, as well as by Catholic social teaching after Leo XIII. Lenzini’s ministry unfolded against that background. He was known for regular celebration of the liturgy, catechesis, care of the sick, and a preaching style that did not avoid controversial subjects when he believed the Christian faith was at stake.

From 1939 he was parish priest of Crocette di Montignano, a small settlement in the coastal hinterland of the Marche, in the area of Senigallia. There he lived in the parish house and served a modest rural congregation. Contemporaries remembered him as austere, firm in doctrine, and unwilling to remain silent about ideologies he considered hostile to Christianity. During the Second World War the region saw German occupation, the Allied advance, and the activity of partisan bands of various political colors. After the Liberation in 1945, some communist formations remained armed and engaged in reprisals against those they regarded as enemies, including clergy who had denounced Marxism.

On the night of 20–21 July 1945, several weeks after the end of the war in Europe, armed men identified in the later ecclesiastical inquiry as communist partisans abducted Lenzini from his rectory. He was beaten and taken into the countryside near Crocette di Montignano, where he was killed by a firearm. He was sixty-four years old. His body was found a short time afterward and showed traces of violence consistent with maltreatment before death. Local faithful and diocesan authorities treated the killing as a religious murder, arguing that he had been chosen because he was a priest who had preached against atheistic communism and had refused to abandon his post or his teaching.

A cause of beatification was later introduced in the Diocese of Fano, and the diocesan process gathered testimony about his life, his reputation for fidelity, and the circumstances of his death. After examination by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome, Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing his martyrdom in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith) on 23 January 2020. He was beatified on 28 August 2022 in Fano, in a rite celebrated in the Pope’s name. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 21 July, the anniversary of his death. He is honored as a blessed martyr and has not been canonized; no extensive official list of patronages has been attached to his name. Devotion to him remains centered in the Marche, especially in the communities where he served.
