Biography

Short Description

Luigi Maria Monti was born on 24 July 1825 in Bovisio (now part of Bovisio Masciago) in Lombardy, then within the Austrian-ruled Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia. He was the eighth of eleven children of Francesco Monti and Maria Caravati. His father died when Luigi was twelve, leaving the family in poverty. The boy left formal schooling and trained as a craftsman, working as a carpenter and cabinetmaker to help support his mother and siblings. From youth he showed marked piety and a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception.

In the 1840s he gathered other young men of Bovisio into a pious association for prayer, catechesis, and charity. During the politically tense years around 1848 such gatherings drew the suspicion of the Austrian authorities. In 1851 Monti and several companions were arrested on charges of conspiracy, imprisoned, and later acquitted. After his release he moved to Milan and worked as a nurse at the Ospedale Maggiore, distinguishing himself in the care of the sick poor, including during cholera outbreaks. He made a private vow of chastity and discerned a vocation as a religious brother rather than a priest, wishing to found a community dedicated to nursing and to the care of orphans.

In 1857 he established the Congregation of the Sons of the Immaculate Conception (Figli dell'Immacolata Concezione). The institute combined consecrated life with hospital work and the education of abandoned youth. Monti remained a lay brother all his life and never received holy orders; he served as superior of the new congregation. The brothers opened houses attached to hospitals and orphanages in northern Italy. His leadership included periods of internal difficulty, misunderstanding, and personal illness, yet he continued to guide the community by example. In later years he lived at the congregation’s house in Saronno, near Milan.

Monti died in Saronno on 1 October 1900. The congregation survived and later expanded internationally, retaining its charism of healthcare and care for orphans. His cause of beatification was introduced in the Archdiocese of Milan. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 9 November 2003 in Saint Peter’s Square. Blessed Luigi Maria Monti is commemorated on 1 October and is remembered as a humble religious brother who placed service of the sick and the abandoned at the centre of consecrated life.
