Biography

Short Description

Luisa Guidotti Mistrali was an Italian physician and Catholic lay missionary, born in Parma on 17 May 1932. She grew up in a Catholic family in Emilia and studied medicine at the University of Parma, qualifying as a doctor of medicine and surgery. In the postwar decades a strong current of missionary and social commitment ran through Italian Catholic youth; her own vocation took shape in that setting, including contact with Gioventù Studentesca, the student movement linked to the priest Luigi Giussani that later became Communion and Liberation. Instead of remaining in private practice in Italy she chose to put her medical training at the service of the missions in southern Africa.

In the 1960s she left for Rhodesia, then entering the long conflict that followed the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. She worked as a doctor in rural Catholic mission hospitals that served African patients with little other access to modern care. Her principal post was the hospital of All Souls Mission at Driefontein in the Midlands, where she practised general medicine, surgery and obstetrics and travelled to outlying clinics. Conditions grew harsher as the Rhodesian Bush War spread through the countryside in the 1970s; mission stations stood between government security forces and nationalist guerrillas, and staff faced isolation, shortages and physical danger. Colleagues later remembered her as professionally capable, personally austere, and determined not to abandon the hospital.

On 6 July 1979, during the last violent year of the war, she was driving an ambulance on a medical errand—accounts indicate she was transporting or going to the aid of a patient—when the vehicle was fired upon at or near a security checkpoint. She was hit by gunfire and died of her wounds the same day, at the age of forty-seven. Responsibility has been attributed in contemporary and later reports to Rhodesian security-force personnel. She was buried in the country where she had served. She never married and had no children; her adult life was given entirely to medicine and to the mission.

Her death was received in Italy as that of a missionary who had fallen in the exercise of charity. A diocesan inquiry into her life was later opened in the Catholic Church, and she is honoured as a Servant of God, though she has not been beatified or canonized. Her memory is kept among missionaries, in Communion and Liberation and related volunteer circles, and in Christian communities in Zimbabwe that still recall the Italian doctor of Driefontein.
