Biography

Short Description

Luíza Andaluz, whose name is also rendered Luísa Andaluz in Portuguese sources, was born on 12 February 1877 in the municipality of Mação in the Santarém District of central Portugal. She grew up in a Catholic setting in a largely rural part of the country during the last decades of the Portuguese constitutional monarchy. In an era when professional paths open to women were still few, she trained as a teacher and devoted her working life to the instruction and Christian formation of young people, especially girls, at a time when literacy and schooling remained uneven across Portuguese society.

The political and religious climate of Portugal changed sharply after the revolution of 1910 and the proclamation of the First Republic. Anticlerical legislation dissolved religious orders, secularized much of public education, and restricted the visible life of the Catholic Church. Andaluz continued her pedagogical and apostolic work in that difficult setting. The reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Fátima in 1917, in the same central Portuguese region with which she was connected, became a decisive reference for her spirituality. She took the Fatima themes of prayer, conversion, and reparation as a program both for personal holiness and for an active apostolate in education and catechesis.

In 1923 she founded the community that developed into the Congregation of the Servants of Our Lady of Fatima (Congregação das Servas de Nossa Senhora de Fátima). It began as a small association of women committed to consecrated life, teaching, catechetical work, and other services inspired by the message of Fatima. Over the following decades, under her direction, the group obtained ecclesiastical recognition and took shape as an institute of consecrated life, establishing houses and schools and extending its work in Portugal. Andaluz herself lived as a consecrated woman; she did not marry and had no children.

She remained associated with the guidance of this institute into advanced old age and died in Lisbon on 20 August 1973, at the age of ninety-six. A cause for beatification was later introduced. In 2019 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing her heroic virtues, by which she received the title Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and the universal Church has not assigned her an official feast day or a list of patronages. Her memory is preserved chiefly in the congregation she founded and in Portuguese Catholic educational circles.
