Biography

Short Description

Luke of Steiris, also known as Luke the Younger, Luke of Hellas, Hosios Loukas, and Luke Thaumaturgus (the Wonderworker), was a tenth-century Byzantine hermit and monastic founder commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was born in 896 in the village of Kastorion in Phocis, in the Byzantine theme of Hellas. His parents, Stephen and Euphrosyne, were pious Christians of farming stock whose family had originally lived on the island of Aegina; they had fled to the mainland to escape repeated raids by Arab pirates operating from Crete and other Saracen bases in the Aegean. Luke was one of several children and from an early age displayed unusual ascetic tendencies, giving away food and clothing to the poor, sometimes to the distress of his household.

After the death of his father, Luke left home around the age of fourteen to pursue the monastic life. He received the monastic tonsure and spent a period at a monastery in Athens before withdrawing to live as a hermit. For about seven years he dwelt on Mount Ioannitza near Corinth, practicing severe fasting, vigil, and manual labor. He subsequently moved among several deserted or rural sites in the northern Peloponnese and central Greece, including a sojourn at Zemena and at an abandoned church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. Throughout these years he acquired a reputation for spiritual discernment, healing, and prophecy, attracting both visitors seeking counsel and occasional hostility from those who misunderstood his way of life.

In 946 Luke settled permanently at Steiri (Steirion) on the slopes of Mount Helicon, near the later village of that name on the borders of Phocis and Boeotia. There he lived in a small cell, gathered a few disciples, and laid the foundations of the community that would become the Monastery of Hosios Loukas. He was credited with numerous miracles of healing and with the gift of foreknowledge; among the prophecies attributed to him was the prediction that the island of Crete would be recovered from the Arabs, an event fulfilled in 961 under the general Nikephoros Phokas, some years after Luke’s death. Pilgrims and local people came to him for prayer, and his hermitage grew into an organized monastic settlement under his spiritual direction.

Luke died on 7 February 953 and was buried at the site of his hermitage. His tomb quickly became a focus of pilgrimage, and miracles were reported at his relics. Within a few decades his disciples and later benefactors, including members of the Byzantine elite, constructed the churches that still stand at Hosios Loukas: first the Church of the Theotokos over or near his burial place, and later the great katholikon, whose mosaics and marble decoration make the monastery one of the outstanding monuments of middle Byzantine art and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery remains a major shrine. His vita, written by a contemporary disciple not long after his death, is the principal source for his life and presents him as a model of eremitic holiness in tenth-century Greece. He is commemorated on 7 February.
