Biography

Short Description

Saint Mabyn, also recorded as Mabena, Maben, or Mabenna, is a Cornish saint of the early medieval period whose cult is centred on the village and civil parish of St Mabyn in north Cornwall, England. No contemporary Life or charter names her, and no verified year of birth or death survives. Later genealogical and hagiographical tradition, current by the later Middle Ages and set down in writing by the Cornish recusant antiquary Nicholas Roscarrock (c. 1549–1634), places her among the numerous children of Brychan, the legendary fifth-century king of Brycheiniog in south-east Wales. In that tradition Brychan’s offspring—often numbered at twenty-four, though the lists vary—dispersed as missionaries, hermits, and foundresses of churches across Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. Mabyn is thereby grouped with Cornish dedicatees such as Saints Nectan of Hartland, Morwenna, Endelienta (Endelient), Minver (Menefreda), and Clether. The Brychan cycle is largely legendary, and Mabyn’s place in it cannot be confirmed from independent fifth- or sixth-century evidence; if the tradition preserves any historical kernel, she would belong to the so-called Age of the Saints in western Britain.

Roscarrock described her as a virgin who lived a holy life, in keeping with the pattern of female Celtic saints who adopted an eremitical or semi-eremitical vocation rather than membership of a later, named religious order. No medieval vita of any length is known, and there is no reliable information about where she was born, where she died, or where she was buried, though local memory naturally associated her with the site of the later parish church. William Worcester, travelling in the west in 1478, noted the church of Sancta Mabena virgo, which shows that a female cult under that name was already established in Cornwall by the later fifteenth century. The present parish church of St Mabyn, a substantial granite building of the fifteenth century with a prominent tower, stands on a site presumed to be of earlier Christian use; the dedication is to St Mabena. A parish revel or feast was traditionally kept in connection with her commemoration.

Her feast day is given as 18 November. She is the patron saint of the parish of St Mabyn; no wider medieval or modern patronages of professions, illnesses, or other places are securely attested. Like most early British saints she was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type. Her status rests on local cult and on the pre-Congregation recognition typical of the Celtic west. The personal name Mabyn/Mabena has been compared with Welsh Mabon and with the Celtic divine name Maponos, and some modern scholars have suggested that an originally male or pre-Christian cult may have been reinterpreted as that of a female virgin saint; the local Cornish tradition, however, is consistently that of a woman. Beyond the place-name, the church dedication, Worcester’s notice, and Roscarrock’s brief account, the historical record is silent, and any reconstruction of her career remains conjectural.
