Biography

Short Description

Mac Cuilinn (also rendered Macculin, Maculinus, or Mac Cuilinn of Lusk) was an early Irish saint and bishop associated with the church of Lusca, the modern village of Lusk in Fingal, County Dublin, in the province of Leinster. Irish annalistic sources, including the Annals of Ulster, the Annals of Tigernach, and the Annals of the Four Masters, record the death of Mac Cuilinn, bishop of Lusk, under the year 496. Like other fifth-century entries in the Irish chronicles, that date belongs to a period whose chronology was assembled retrospectively and should be treated with caution, but it remains the conventional year assigned to his death. His feast is observed on 6 September, the date under which he appears in the principal Irish martyrologies.

Genealogical tracts preserved in medieval Irish collections assign Mac Cuilinn a pedigree among the Dál Messin Corb, an early Leinster kindred that held power in parts of the coastal plain north of Dublin before later dynasties rose to prominence. He is typically styled Mac Cuilinn mac Cathmoga (son of Cathmog). Such saintly genealogies were often shaped to link ecclesiastical founders with regional royal lines and cannot be verified independently, but they indicate that later tradition regarded him as a Leinsterman connected with the local secular elite of the Lusk district.

Lusk itself was an important early medieval ecclesiastical centre. The site is marked by a well-known round tower, later incorporated into a medieval parish church, which attests to a substantial monastic or episcopal community in the early Christian period. Mac Cuilinn is remembered as bishop of this church and is widely regarded as its founding or principal early saint, though contemporary documentation of a formal foundation does not survive. In the early Irish church the offices of abbot and bishop were frequently combined at such sites, and Mac Cuilinn’s title of bishop of Lusca fits that pattern of a local monastic bishop rather than a diocesan prelate of the later medieval type.

He is commemorated on 6 September in the Martyrology of Óengus (Félire Óengusso), the Martyrology of Tallaght, the Martyrology of Gorman, and the Martyrology of Donegal, which together establish a consistent early medieval cult. The parish of Lusk has continued to honour him as its patron. Beyond the annalistic death-notice, the martyrological entries, and the genealogical attribution, little narrative hagiography of Mac Cuilinn has been preserved. No early Life (vita) is known to survive, and later writers add few incidents that can be treated as historical. His cult therefore rests on the local association with Lusk, the witness of the Irish calendars, and the brief chronicle record of a late fifth-century bishop of that church. Veneration of Mac Cuilinn belongs to the pre-congregational era of the saints; he was not the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type. The historical Mac Cuilinn remains an obscure figure whose importance is primarily local and liturgical, as the saint of Lusk and as one of the early bishops named in the Irish annals for the generation after the traditional floruit of Saint Patrick.
