Biography

Short Description

Macarius of Unzha, also known in Russian tradition as Makary Unzhensky and Zheltovodsky (Macarius of Unzha and Yellow Waters), was a Russian Orthodox monk and wonderworker of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. According to his traditional life, he was born in 1349 in Nizhny Novgorod to pious parents and from childhood was drawn to prayer and monastic discipline. At the age of twelve he left home and entered the Caves Monastery of the Ascension (the Pechersky Monastery) in Nizhny Novgorod, where he received the monastic tonsure from the abbot Dionysius, later Archbishop of Suzdal. He remained there for many years in obedience, fasting, and seclusion, forming the ascetic habits that later sources present as the foundation of his reputation for holiness.

After a long residence at the Nizhny Novgorod Caves Monastery, Macarius withdrew to a more solitary life along the Volga. In the 1430s he established a monastic community at Yellow Waters (Zheltye Vody) on the Volga, later known as the Makariev Zheltovodsky Monastery. Disciples gathered around him, and the community became a local center of monastic life. In 1439 the region was struck by a raid associated with Khan Ulugh Muhammad of Kazan. Hagiographical accounts state that the Yellow Waters monastery was destroyed and that Macarius, the brethren, and many laypeople were taken captive. The same tradition relates that the khan, impressed by the elder’s bearing, released Macarius and the other captives but forbade him to restore the monastery on that site.

Macarius then moved north with followers to the forested Unzha River country in the Galich lands, in what later became the Kostroma region. There he founded a new monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity, which became the Makariev Unzhensky Monastery. He spent his remaining years in that remote community as its spiritual father. Traditional narratives credit him with preaching among the local population, including non-Christian peoples of the Volga basin, and with healings and other wonders attributed to his prayers. He died at the Unzha monastery on 25 July 1444, at the traditional age of ninety-five.

Veneration of Macarius spread after his death in the Unzha and Volga regions. His tomb became a pilgrimage site, and later sources record miracles associated with his relics. The Unzha monastery grew into an important spiritual center, and the town of Makaryev developed around it. The Yellow Waters monastery was refounded in the seventeenth century. Relics connected with the saint were uncovered in the seventeenth century and remained objects of devotion. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates him on 25 July as a venerable monastic saint and wonderworker, especially in the Nizhny Novgorod and Kostroma lands. Precise archival detail for his early life is limited, and the narrative of his career rests chiefly on ecclesiastical tradition and later monastic records rather than on contemporary secular documentation.
