Biography

Short Description

Macedonius of Syria, also called Macedonius the Hermit and Macedonius Critophagus (Barley-Eater), was a Christian ascetic of northern Syria in the later fourth and early fifth centuries. Almost everything that can be said of him with any confidence comes from Theodoret of Cyrrhus, who devoted a chapter of his Historia Religiosa, or History of the Monks of Syria, to Macedonius and who claimed a close personal debt to the hermit. Macedonius lived in the mountains in the orbit of Antioch and later in the countryside of Cyrrhus. For decades he had no hut or cave, remaining in the open air through heat and frost; only in old age did he accept a simple shelter. He was nicknamed Critophagus because for many years his only food was ground barley moistened with water. Fellow ascetics and clergy eventually persuaded him to take bread as well. He spoke Syriac and, according to Theodoret, had little Greek, which shaped both his rustic manner and some of the anecdotes told about him.

Theodoret states that Macedonius passed some forty-five years unsheltered and about twenty-five years in a hut, and that he reached a great age. He was not a man of the cities or of ecclesiastical office by choice. Tradition associated with Theodoret holds that Flavian, bishop of Antioch, ordained him to the priesthood, in circumstances that left the hermit unwilling and uncomprehending at first; Macedonius continued thereafter to live as a solitary rather than as a parish priest. He was sought out for healing and counsel. Theodoret credits him with miracles of curing the sick and with a blunt prophetic frankness toward the powerful. Among those who resorted to him was Theodoret’s own mother. Long childless, she obtained the hermit’s prayers and blessing; Theodoret presents his own birth as the fruit of that intercession and records that he was dedicated to God in consequence. He later visited the aged Macedonius and received his blessing.

Macedonius also entered the public memory of Antioch through the crisis that followed the Riot of the Statues in 387. After the populace had destroyed imperial images and the city stood under threat of savage punishment, monks came down from the surrounding mountains to plead for mercy. Theodoret attributes to Macedonius a speech before the imperial commissioners in which the hermit reminded them that the emperor was mortal, that bronze statues could be recast, and that human beings, made in the image of God, could not be replaced. The episode, whether reported with exact words or not, placed the barley-eating solitary among the spiritual intercessors of the city at a moment of political terror, and it is consistent with John Chrysostom’s contemporary picture of monks appearing in Antioch as advocates for the people.

Macedonius died in the Syrian countryside in the early fifth century. No reliable source records an exact year of birth or death, nor a precise place of burial. Approximate dates such as about 420 appear in later notices but are not independently fixed. He was venerated as a saint in the Christian East; the Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 24 January. He was never a patriarch or bishop of Rome, founded no religious order, and left no writings. His historical profile remains that of a Syriac-speaking hermit whose extreme poverty, barley diet, longevity, and reported miracles were written into the monastic landscape of Syria by a bishop who believed he owed the hermit his life.
