Biography

Short Description

Maddalena Caterina Morano was born on 15 November 1847 in Chieri, in the Piedmontese province of Turin, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia. She was one of eight children of Francesco Morano and Concetta Buzzetti. Her childhood was marked by loss and economic strain: her father died when she was about eight years old, and the death of an older sister followed, leaving her mother to raise the remaining children in reduced circumstances. Maddalena contributed to the support of the household from a young age while also pursuing the studies needed to qualify as a teacher. After obtaining her teaching diploma in the 1860s she taught for many years in the municipal school of Montaldo Torinese. Those who knew her in this period described a capable and serious instructor who combined ordinary classroom work with catechesis. She had felt a vocation to religious life since her youth, but she postponed entering a convent until her siblings no longer depended on her wages.

When her family obligations had eased, she sought admission to the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the congregation of women religious founded by Saint John Bosco and Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello and commonly known as the Salesian Sisters. Don Bosco himself encouraged her vocation. She entered the institute in the later 1870s at Nizza Monferrato, then the principal house of formation for the congregation, received the religious habit, and made her profession. In 1881, at Don Bosco’s direction, she was sent to Sicily, where Salesian work among the young was only beginning. She was assigned first to Trecastagni, near Catania, and from that base she spent the remaining quarter-century of her life establishing schools, oratories, boarding houses, and workshops, especially for girls from poor families.

Sicily in the last decades of the nineteenth century presented both pastoral need and social hardship. Morano promoted literacy, vocational training, and religious instruction according to the Salesian educational approach associated with Don Bosco. Under her leadership the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians opened numerous houses in eastern Sicily, and she was entrusted with local and provincial responsibility for the sisters on the island. She formed generations of religious for teaching and youth ministry and was remembered for practical charity, long hours of work, and firmness in the direction of communities. She continued this labor despite recurring ill health.

Morano died in Catania on 26 March 1908. Devotion to her memory persisted among the Salesians and among the people she had served in Sicily, where she was regarded as a pioneer of the congregation’s educational apostolate. A canonical process for her beatification was later introduced. After recognition of her heroic virtues, Pope John Paul II beatified her on 5 November 1994, during an apostolic visit to Sicily. She is honored in the Roman Catholic Church as Blessed Maddalena Caterina Morano; her memory is kept especially by the Salesian Family and in the regions of Piedmont and eastern Sicily where she lived and worked. She has not been canonized.
