Biography

Short Description

Saint Madron, also recorded as Madern, is among the early medieval saints of Cornwall whose historical outline is known almost entirely from later place-names, church dedications, and antiquarian notices rather than from a contemporary biography. Tradition places him in the sixth century, in the period when Celtic monastic and eremitical life was taking root in the far west of Britain. The village and civil parish of Madron, on the Penwith peninsula in west Cornwall, derive their name from him, and the parish church of St Madron was historically the mother church of Penzance. He is usually described as a hermit or monk who established himself in this district of the old British kingdom of Dumnonia, but no reliable account of his parentage, training, or travels survives.

The chief monument of his cult is St Madron's Well, a spring a short walk from the parish church. From the later Middle Ages onward the well was celebrated for cures, especially of lameness and of diseases of children; crutches and other ex-votos were left at the site, and baptismal and divinatory customs persisted well after the Reformation. In 1478 the itinerant antiquary William Worcester recorded both the well and a local claim that the saint's body lay in the church at Madron. A ruined medieval baptistery or chapel beside the well belongs to that later period of pilgrimage, not to a sixth-century hermitage. The well's reputation made Madron one of the better-known of Cornwall's otherwise obscure Celtic saints.

Scholars have occasionally proposed that Madron is identical with the better-documented saint Padarn (Paternus), associated with Wales and Brittany, or with one or another Irish figure of similar name. None of these identifications has won general acceptance. The evidence is most economically read as pointing to a local Cornish ascetic whose memory was preserved in the landscape and in parish liturgy. His feast is observed on 17 May. Like most saints of the Celtic churches, he was never the object of a formal papal process of canonization; veneration arose locally and was already established by the time later medieval sources mention him.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries folklorists still collected stories of the well's power to heal the crippled and of pins, pebbles, and rags used in popular rites. The parish continues to bear his name, and the well remains a place of interest for those concerned with Cornish Christian history and folk practice. Beyond these attestations, the life of Madron himself cannot be reconstructed in any detail; the honest conclusion of the sources is that he was a sixth-century holy man of west Cornwall whose cult outlived almost all biographical memory.
