Biography

Short Description

The individual recorded under the name Magdalene Cho, also given as Madeleine Cho, could not be matched with confidence to a fully documented life in the standard historical and hagiographical sources available for verification. The identifiers supplied with the request were not sufficient to isolate a single, well-attested biography, and no reliable year of birth, place of origin, or date of death can therefore be stated. In keeping with a cautious historical method, fields that cannot be corroborated have been left blank rather than filled by conjecture.

The personal name Magdalene (Madeleine in French-language Catholic usage) is a baptismal name drawn from Mary Magdalene, widely used among Catholic communities in East Asia from the eighteenth century onward. Cho is a common Korean surname (often romanized Cho or Jo). Combinations of Christian given names with Korean family names are characteristic of the Catholic community that formed in Joseon Korea, a community that suffered repeated persecutions in the nineteenth century and that produced numerous martyrs later recognized by the Catholic Church. That onomastic pattern, however, does not by itself identify a particular person, and it would be unsound to equate this subject with any one of the similarly named figures who appear on martyr lists without a source that makes the identification explicit.

Lists of the Korean martyrs canonized in 1984 include several women named Magdalena and several members of the Cho family, among them Barbara Cho Chŭng-i and others who died in the persecutions of 1839 and 1866. Those persons have their own documented notices; they should not be merged with an otherwise unattached Magdalene Cho. No feast day, patronage, religious order, or act of beatification or canonization can be responsibly assigned here.

Accordingly this record notes only what can be affirmed without speculation: the subject is treated as female on the basis of the given name, was neither Bishop of Rome nor a patriarch of an Eastern church, and cannot on present evidence be given a verified birth year, death year, or place of burial. Further research in Korean Catholic archival sources, the Positio of the Korean martyrs, or a corresponding Wikidata item would be required before a fuller biography could be written.
