Biography

Short Description

Magdalene Han Yŏng-i (Korean: 한영이 막달레나), a laywoman of the Catholic Church in Joseon Korea, is venerated as one of the 103 Korean Martyrs. She was born in 1783. Korean Catholicism in her lifetime was a prohibited religion. It had taken root in the 1780s through Korean lay scholars who studied Christian texts brought from China, and it survived without resident clergy for many years. Converts faced legal penalties, social exclusion, and the risk of death because the Joseon court regarded the faith as subversive of Confucian hierarchy and ancestral rites.

Historical notices describe Magdalene as a widow who persevered in Catholic practice. Like other Korean lay Catholics of the early nineteenth century, she would have belonged to a household or village circle that gathered in secret for prayer and instruction. The Gihae persecution of 1839 followed the clandestine entry of French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and a renewed determination by the government to suppress Christianity. Arrests, interrogations, and demands that prisoners trample a crucifix or recant were standard.

Magdalene was taken into custody during that campaign. After refusing to apostatize she was condemned. On 29 December 1839 she was executed by beheading in Seoul. She was about fifty-six years old. The same persecution claimed three French missionaries and a large number of Korean clergy and laity; executions took place at sites outside the city gates, notably near the Small West Gate (Seosomun).

Her martyrdom was recognized by the Holy See in the causes of the Korean martyrs. Pope Pius XI beatified seventy-nine of them, including Magdalene Han Yŏng-i, on 5 July 1925. Pope John Paul II canonized the full group of 103 Martyr Saints of Korea on 6 May 1984 in Seoul. They are commemorated together on 20 September. Surviving documentation for individual lay martyrs of 1839 is often brief, drawn from official interrogation records and later missionary compilations; Magdalene’s birthplace, the name of her husband, whether she had children, and the place of her burial are not securely recorded in the sources commonly cited by historians and hagiographers.
