Biography

Short Description

Magdalene Yi Yŏng-dŏk (Korean: 이영덕 막달레나; also romanized Magdalena Yi Yeong-deok) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the Joseon period. She was born in 1811 in Seoul into a family that belonged to the clandestine Catholic community which had taken root in Korea from the late eighteenth century. Catholicism reached the peninsula largely through Chinese Catholic books and through Korean lay converts rather than through a resident foreign mission, because the Joseon state forbade Christianity as incompatible with Confucian ancestral rites and royal authority. By the early nineteenth century small networks of believers existed in the capital and in the provinces, often among both yangban and commoner households, and they lived under the constant threat of denunciation and official persecution.

Surviving hagiographical notices, compiled later for her cause of beatification, present Yi Yŏng-dŏk as having been formed in this hidden Church from childhood. She is described as devout, given to prayer and works of charity, and as having chosen to remain unmarried in a society that strongly expected women to marry and continue the family line. Like several other Korean Catholic women of her generation, she is said to have made a private resolution of virginity. There were as yet no communities of women religious in Korea; her dedication was therefore lived as a lay celibate within the family and the underground congregation. Individual anecdotal detail about her daily life is sparse, as is typical for many of the Korean martyrs whose records survive mainly in interrogation reports and in later collective acts.

In 1839 the Joseon government launched the Kihae persecution, a major campaign against Catholics that followed earlier suppressions, notably that of 1801. Believers in Seoul and elsewhere were arrested, imprisoned, and pressed to recant, often by trampling a crucifix or performing Confucian rites. Magdalene was seized in the capital, interrogated by magistrates, and subjected to the beatings and other judicial tortures then used against those who refused to apostatize. Catholic accounts emphasize that she would not deny her faith. She was condemned to death and executed by beheading at Seoul, at the execution ground associated with Seosomun (the Small West Gate) outside the city walls, on 29 December 1839. She was about twenty-eight years old. Her death belonged to a cluster of public executions of Catholics in the capital during that year.

She was among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs of the 1839 and 1846 persecutions beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925, and among the one hundred three Korean martyrs canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul. The Church keeps their collective memorial on 20 September, the feast of Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and companions. Individual biographical sources beyond the outline of birth, lay virginity, arrest, torture, and beheading remain limited; she is venerated as one of the companions rather than as a figure with a large independent cult or a list of particular patronages.
