Biography

Short Description

Saint Magloire, known in Latin as Maglorius and in Breton contexts sometimes as Magloré, was a monastic founder and bishop of the sixth century whose cult took root in Brittany, the Channel Islands, and later in Paris. Surviving accounts of his life depend chiefly on a Latin vita written well after his death, probably in the ninth or tenth century, and therefore cannot be treated as a contemporary record. That tradition places his birth in Wales, in a family of high rank. His father is named Umbrafel (or Umbrafelius) and his mother Afrella; Afrella is described as a close kinswoman of Saint Samson of Dol, so that Magloire appears as Samson's cousin. He is said to have been sent to the monastery of Llanilltud Fawr (Llantwit Major) in Glamorgan, the school of Saint Illtud, and to have been educated there alongside Samson, Gildas, and Paul Aurelian. No reliable source preserves an exact year of birth.

After ordination, Magloire is portrayed as a companion of Samson in the migration of British clergy to Armorica (Brittany). He lived under Samson's authority as a monk and, according to the later lists of the see of Dol, succeeded Samson as bishop of Dol-de-Bretagne. How far this episcopal succession reflects sixth-century reality is uncertain: Dol's early history was reconstructed in the Carolingian and later periods to support the claims of a Breton metropolitan see, and the Vita Maglorii itself is shaped by those interests. What can be said with more confidence is that Magloire was remembered as a monastic leader connected both with the Dol district and with the sea routes of the Channel. After some years in office he is said to have resigned the bishopric, warned in a vision that he should not die as a bishop, and to have sought a stricter eremitical and cenobitic life.

Tradition then takes him to the Channel Islands. He is described as staying for a time in Jersey before settling on Sark, where he founded a monastery and gathered a community numbered in the vita at sixty-two monks. On Sark he is credited with converting the remaining pagan inhabitants, with miraculous healings, and with finding water for the community. He died on the island and was buried there. The date of death is often given in older handbooks as about 575, but that figure is conventional rather than documented, and modern historians prefer to locate him simply in the sixth century.

In the ninth century, under pressure from Scandinavian raids, his relics were translated from Sark to the monastery of Léhon, on the Rance near Dinan in Brittany, which thereafter bore his name. In the mid-tenth century, during the restoration of monastic life in the Île-de-France, the relics were taken to Paris and enshrined in a church on the right bank of the Seine that became the Abbey of Saint-Magloire. The Parisian abbey, later associated with the Canons Regular, kept his cult alive in the capital until the French Revolution, when the community was suppressed and the relics were largely lost or dispersed. A later church of Saint-Magloire in Paris continued the dedication. In Brittany, Léhon and the former diocese of Dol remained centres of his memory.

Magloire's feast is celebrated on 24 October, the date under which he appears in the Roman Martyrology as a bishop in Brittany and a disciple of Saint Samson. He is regarded as the patron saint of Sark. Because the written life is late, heavily indebted to common hagiographical motifs, and entangled with the medieval politics of the see of Dol, historians treat genealogies, miracle stories, and precise career stages with caution. The core of the tradition—that a British-trained monk named Magloire (Maglorius) was venerated as a founder on Sark and as a holy bishop in the orbit of Dol—remains the most secure outline of his biography.
